What's the best starling bait?
« on: May 20, 2010, 12:49:36 AM »
Well I am having to move the shooting lanes because the birds are catching onto me. I have to wear a lite colored shirt to blend in with the walls if I have the windows open in the computer room other wise the birds haul but. So I am switching it up and shooting out of the garage. The starlings however like the back yard. What baits would be good to lure them to the side yard? I have a patch of trees and bushes to hang feeders and lots of pretty grass to spread seed in.

Also how loud is the disco? It says level 4 but my 3 springers are level 3 and that's not bad. So how realy loud is the disco. I was looking at a mrod but just can't justify that much, yet, so was looking at the disco.

And 3rd third. I popped a male grackle yesterday and the wife was whining again. I have told her all the bad thins they do and she didn't beleive me on most of them. Well yesterday while we were all eating dinner a big male mounted the smaller male I bad shot and proceded to breed. Lol so there are the kids me and mom at the table and live bird getting dead bird out back. Lol I looked at her ans said I told you the were nasty birds! She said it was trying to help the other.

I think she may be coming around.

Still have alot of Starlings in the area, but since the grass has greened up here, they could careless what I put out by the feeder, or on the compost pile, they are only interested in searching the grass for bugs !!!!

As a result I've stopped putting the cats stale dry cat food out by the feeder. Instead, I've been saving it in a ziplock in the freezer for when the snows come.

They also seem to have learned that looking for bugs in my lawn is deadly. Lots of them in the area, but only getting one or two showing up here about every couple of weeks now.

Got this one broad-side the other day. The Predator realy busted up the wing at the shoulder joint and because of the large exit wound, the other wing was only held on by a couple of thin strands of flesh.  Just enough that the wing didn't fall off when one of my Clean-up Crows flew off with it 20 minutes later.  :D

I'm using cat food. Cheap generic from Kroger. I also put down cracked corn. The starlings will eat it but don't love it. It does bring in the grackles which will make the starlings feel comfortable. Grackles are easier to get to come in, so I'd not shoot them, but rather use them as decoys. Also, if you've got bread and/or left over pizza, the starlings will come in for that, too. Initially, make a pretty good pile on the ground so that they can see it.

That ought to bring them in.

White millet, sun-flower seed ( both varieties), and wild bird mix. Also, gravy train type dog food will bring in the grackles. I'm sorta preparing my "dove field" and top count this Saturday morning was around 20, seems like each time they show up, they bring a friend, HeHeHe!! They've gotten so used to me shooting and plinking, that they rarely fly off now. They also make great decoys along with the song birds that are under friendly surveilance,....Gracks, Starlings and Sparrows only,...until this fall that is! tjk
