My Choice has been made... another question
« on: June 18, 2007, 09:50:37 AM »
Thanks for all the advice/info in my other post.

I am going to get the CFX from Pyramyd in .177. It took a bit of work, but Pyramyd will work with me to get around their limited pick up hours!!! I'll place the order tonight and hopefully pick it up tomorrow (Tues.)

So now, I am wondering; of the BSA scopes that I can get with the combo, the 4x32 or 2-7x32, is either significantly better in quality or anything? Of course I would choose the 2-7x32 everything else being equal.

I have been using a BSA 2-7x32 on an RWS 34 for about the last month or so and it is a pretty decent scope once I got the eye relief nut to loosen up so I could get the correct AO settings. If those are your options I would definately go with the 2-7x32.

I'd definitely go with the 2-7x32, it's not a bad little scope, and it's got an adjustable objective, the 4x doen't.  Nice choice, I think you'll be happy with it.  Later.

Howard, I have a 2-7X32 in a BSA and it is not a bad scope.. But I finally had a chance to look through a Tasco Golden Antler 3-9X32AO  this weekend at  our shootout and was I very surprised at the clearity and how nice it was.. I would not even think of normally buying anything less than a 4 power but the Tasco Golden Eagle is an exception. So I ordered one today for my new QB-57..

Haa haa haa, I changed my mind and went with the .22 and it only comes with the 4x32. It's an ok scope. In the future, I'll upgrade the glass.

Pyramydair was way cool in this whole order.

I got home and pulled it out of the box and checked it out... very nice rifle. The rear sight was loose so my first Gamo Goodwrench duty was to tighten it up and Loctite the screw. The shroud on the front sight seems a bit weak. After checking that out, I am thinking it is simply just the design of it.

I was only able to put about 20 Beeman Silver Tips through it tonight and it was very cool in doing that. The groups weren't too bad, but I definately need to finish sighting in the scope and working on my shooting technique. I had to keep reminding myself not to hold it like a 12 gauge.

I have a Otis cleaning kit for powder firearms. Can I use the powder .22 hardware to clean the .22 CFX? I remember reading that airguns should use only airgun oils and cleaning solvent as the rings and seals may get trashed by powder solvents and oils. I did get some Pellgunoil but forgot to get a cleaner. Any suggestions for that?

In the next few days I'll get a M.O. off to Bob for his trigger.

You won't be sorry, Howard.  On cleaning air guns, DO NOT USE FIREARM CLEANING EQUIPEMENT ON AIRGUNS!!!  Just wanted to make sure you heard me :-).  All you need is a few patches and some Goo Gone or Simple Green.  Note that both of those are cleaner/degreasers, not solvents.  Most, if not all, of the firearms solvents will damage airgun seals.  I use an Otis flexible cleaning kit, works fine in the CFX.  Lots of guys just use weed wacker line, with a ball melted on one end to hold the patch.  Also, NO METAL BRUSHES!!!  Truth is, airguns need cleaning very seldom, maybe once every 3-5000 pellets.  And expect accuracy to drop off immediately after cleaning for the next 100 or so shots.  What leading happens in an airgun actually helps improve the sealing and accuracy of the gun, so the less cleaing, the better.

You mentioned Beeman Silver Tips, I know they have several pellets that start with Silver, but none that end with Tips.  Silver Jets, Silver Arrows, Silver Bears, seems like I'm missing one.  Silver Arrows are pointed, and too heavy for the CFX, even in .22.  Also not very accurate in my experience.  Silver Jets can be good, Silver Bears can be very good, depending on the rifle.  So far, I've just been breaking mine in with Superdomes, sub 1 inch groups at 30 yards even with the stock trigger.  Also, unless you open it up, you won't have much use for any lubricants.  Maybe a drop of that Pellgunoil on the cocking linkabe, and that's about it.  Do NOT get any kind of petroleum based anything around the breech and chamber, serious bad mojo if you do.  Makes things go bang, which is not something you want with and airgun.

Regarding hold, the CFX is probably the most forgiving springer out there, as long as you don't use a death grip, it'll probably do what you want it to.  Just get comfortable, and try to do everything the same way all the time.  The rifle will do the rest.  Have fun.
