Hot Duck Farm Hunt
« on: July 07, 2007, 11:50:19 AM »
Spent most of the morning working on my boat and taking it for a test run out on the bay.  Boat ran great so I headed back to the marina, backed it into it's slip and headed home so I could get in some hunting.

Decided to take the B26-2 .177 on this trip, so put some Tomahawks in my pellet pouch and headed for the farm. There were tons of starlings all over the grain feeders, but getting close enough for a shot was tough.  The birds were very spooky today, even my usual hiding spots weren't working.  I did get a few shots, which I missed,  but the action was slow.

I looked down at the far end of the farm and noticed large flocks of birds traveling between a feeder and a large mullberry tree (the one I hunted under during my last hunt) so I headed for the tree.  I set myself up underneath the mullberry tree and just inside some very thick brush.  I cleared a shooting lane to the feeders and sat down to wait. The birds couldn't see me from above or from the feeders so I figured I'd get some action.

Didn't take long before the birds returned.  I cleanly missed the first couple of shots, not sure why, but I did.  After a few minutes a pair of doves landed on the feeders.  Picked out the biggest one, squeezed the trigger and the dove fell off the feeder onto the ground.  My second victim was a young starling.  I waited for him to stop hopping around and pulled the trigger.  Down he went.

The next visitor to the feeder was a nice sized grey squirrel.  He actually descended out of the mullberry tree I was under, jumped onto the ground and headed for the feeder.  Once he reached the feeder he stopped and I put a tomahawk into the side of his head.  He was down for the count.

I stayed under the mullberry tree for another hour and I did nail another 1/2 dozen starlings, but I shot them out of the tree and they landed in thick brush so I couldn't retrieve them for pics.

On the way back to the truck I attempted a stalk on 2 small woodchucks that were feeding on fresh grass in a small field, but I got busted while I was still 75 yards out.  At least I know where they call home now so next hunt I'll lay in wait for them in the late afternoon.

Got home and took a couple of pics.  Here ya go..............
