Any ideas here?
« on: July 07, 2007, 03:01:56 PM »
Hey guys, sometimes my groups spread vertically but are still tight horizontally...any ideas why?

BTW: Gamo Shadow 1000 w/3-9X40, and Kodiak pellets. The yellow circle in the pic is 3/4" in diameter.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

Have you checked to see that your barrel has no play up and down with the lock detent on breech. Reason I ask this is because I would get the same kind of groups from one of my S1K's.. It did not lock up tight after cocking. It seemed that the detent pin on the action side was miss aligned and after it got about 3000 shots it started to loose accuracy. Gamo changed the design by using a pin on the action end that went from side to side. All my other Gamo S1K's have the later pins instead of the detent lug sticking out of the action. Check it by cocking it and puting the rifle on a solid surface and take hold of the barrel while holding the stock and action tight. See if there is any movement up and down.. It drove me nuts for a week and thought my scope was broken..:) I ended up throwing the action in the trash.

Could be barrel lockup (as Gene said), could also be an inconsistent hold. What sorta range where these shots taken at?

It says 25 yards under the picture. Or do you mean shooting range, as in the place where they were shot.

The target is placed at 25 yds, 27 actually, but who's counting?

If it wasn't for the vertical deflection, all six shots would still be within 3/8". Not bad for a Gamo, eh?

your 3-9X40 what scope is it. and is it an air rife specific scope?
I have the same issue with my CFX and a 3-9X40 BSA Deer Hunter Scope. Although this scope is
rated as Air gun "safe" it's parallax is still set to 100 yards and it'll mess with you at 25 yards every time.

Read this thread, it's all true and it explains why Rifle scopes don't always work for air guns. The whole
Parallax thing is too often over looked. Fro Air guns it needs to be 10 yards or closer. 99% of rifle Scopes
are set to 100 yards.
