a little time to play with the QB-D that I got from Mike last week. First, you gotta just luv Mike. He personally put all of the postage on the box using regular stamps. The whole Star Wars series...lol.. Now ya gotta stop and think about that. If'n they were not the self adhesive stamps, it would give a whole new meaning to "Lipstick" now wouldn't it...loll
This gun is fantastic. The fit and finish is certainly better than my other QB's although thet too are nice. The wood on this one is reall nise and Mike did a fine wax job on it prior to shipping. Also, Mike ships double boxed and that's important.
I have done nothing to this gun, just straight out of the box. I started shooting it at random just to get a few pellets through it. The only thing that I noticed was that the trigger has a little scratchy but if it's like some of the other QB's it's the trigger return spring has a tendency to cant a bit and rubs on the side of the hole it seats. A little heavier lube in that little hole will take care of that. Most people may not even notice it.
After about ten rounds, I ran it through the speed traps just to see what it would do. The temp in the shop was about 82-3 degrees. I ran several different pellets through it including Crosman Premiums, Gamo's, JSB's and RWS Super H points. They all shot approx. the same velocity and that was averaging in the 680 to 710 area. They were also very consistent and a real tight spread, within ten fps.
I stuck some glass on it and set it up. I used a 3-9x42 (yes, 42) that I got from John Zye (Xisico) a couple of years ago. This gun is unbelievably accurate once dialed in. It's the tightest of the 5 QB's that I have.
Now you gotta realize that this old man ain't quite as steady as he was 20 years ago and I need to put a scope on each eye just to see the end of the barrel. But let me tell you... After shooting just a bit to learn the gun, at twenty yards, I was stacking them up... and I mean one holers. That was using the RWS Super H Points. The Gamo Hunters were terrible and Mike told me in advance that they didn't work well in this gun. The rest of them were not bad, shooting dime and quarter size groups which in itself I guess ain't bad... especially for me....lol...
I expected to run out of gas but by the time I gave up for the day, and run it across the chrony, it was still pushing them at about 630, so it was getting close. But I pumped quite a bit of lead down the tube and it was still right on. I does seem to be conservative.
Bottom line...thanks Mike for a great gun and for you that are kicking the thought around, just do it. Buy one of the great little guns from Mike and you will never be sorry. Take the time to run over here and see what he has to offer...
