QUESTION REGARDING BSA SCOPES ON GAMOS

Hello, all!

I am new to this forum. My name is Ron and I am from the great state of Kansas (well, I guess "great" is a relative term!) and I have some questions regarding mounting a BSA scope. First, let me explain my dilemma, then I will ask the questions.

I purchased my Gamo Shadow 1000 in October of 2005 from my local Wal-Mart at what I considered to be a very reasonable price. I found the scope (BSA .22 Special 4x32) at a local sporting goods store on sale. This is the same exact scope Gamo sold with the Shadow 1000 combo. After getting the rifle and scope home, I mounted the scope in the grooves in typical fashion and tightened it securely with the rear scope ring butted snugly against the Gamo-supplied scope stop. After about 50 shots, the scope stop popped off. Actually, it buzzed by my ear when I fired the rifle! I contacted Gamo and they told me to remove the scope and clean the receiver grooves out with some denatured alcohol to remove any oil that was present and to do the same to the scope rings and scope stop. I was then instructed to put a drop of Loctite on all the attachment points and secure the scope and scope stop to the rifle and let the Loctite cure for at least 24 hours before firing. After doing this, I was able to fire 1500-2000 rounds with no problem. Recently, the scope stop buzzed by my ear again. Upon inspection, it was obvious the scope had "creeped" towards the rear of the reciever. I removed the scope, cleaned off the Loctite and reattached everything as I had before with fresh Loctite.

Here are my questions:

1) Have any of the rest of you folks had any problems with "scope creep" on the Gamo rifles?

2) Is there a good remedy for this problem?

3) Are the scope rings that come with the BSA scope sufficient for this application?

Hi Ron,,

Welcome to the forum, nice to have you with us.  I have that same scope, actually I have a couple of em, they're pretty good.  As for the rings that they come with,,,, they won't hold on the Shadow 1000.  

The advice you received from GAMO about cleaning everything, and I mean everything, really well with denatured alcohol and also using blue loc-tite is sound advice.  I do that on every scope I mount.  

There are a number of good mounts out there to choose from, some expensive and some not.  I like Accushot 1 piece mounts, available from Pyramydair.com for around $20 bucks, and they have held well on every rifle I installed them on, including my Shadow 1000's.  

BKL also makes an excellent line of scope mounts, although they are a bit pricey (but well worth the money).  Do a search on GTA and you'll come up with a ton of info on scopes, mounts, advice, etc.  I'm sure the other guys will chime in also here and give you their advice as well.

With proper care, what kind of longevity can I expect from my Shadow 1000? Are there any parts that need servicing?

A BIG WELCOME Ron... Glad to have you aboard. Fair warning though. Did you ever hear that phrase. "I betcha can't eat just one"? .. Well if you hang with us your S1K will have a mate very soon. hehe. Really you came to the right place for help with your Gamo. Many of us have them and love them. With the proper setup, you will have many years of enjoyment out of your S1K. Jeff is one of our veterans here and he owns a few Gamo's and has been there and done that. He gave you fantastic advice and I really cannot add much. So get your baby all set up for some long term use and shoot us some pictures and maybe some small game pictures for the Hunting Gate. Best of luck and hope to see you often.

Oh! Almost forgot... Many of us have sent our S1K's to CharlieDa Tuna. You can find his link in the Mall, up above. He manufactures a replacement GRT-III trigger and also does fantastic Turbo Tuns on Gamo's. Just the trigger alone will improve your shooting an accuracy tremendously. A de bur and lube tune with new seal will even enhance your S1K even more. In fact it will perform as well as a $400.00 tp $500.00 air rifle in my opinion. I own 13 of them and 11 of themhave been tuned by CDT. "Charlie Da Tuna". and they are by far fantastic shooters now..

I have a Hunter 220, and to the best of my knowledge, the insides are not much different than the shadow. I have used the BSA scope since Christmas and NEVER had any problem like you are having. Maybe your mount is bad? I hope you get this sorted out,

Welcome to the forum Ron.  Like Jeff stated, a one piece mount should resolve your problem. It's probably the simplest, easiest as well as best solution. And barring any other problem, it doesn't need to be an expensive one. Let me say this though. It the mount that you wind up with has Phillips head screws. go to a hardware store and replace then with hex cap screws. You will find that you can make them much more secure and not damage the heads.

I appreciate the advice. The rings I am currently using were supplied with the scope from BSA and they utilize the aforementioned socket head cap screws. I have had the same problem on my CFX and it also utilizes the same rings... The common denominator here is the way the scope is mounted to the receiver. It is time for me to explore the world of 1-piece mounts...

Ron, the common denominator here is the Gamo supplied rings, they are just kinda whimpy.

I have three of the Accushot one piece mounts, they are strong and and a good choice on a heavy recoil springer. Another option is the Accushot 4 screw two piece mounts. They employ the same recoil stop pin and offer a little more flexibility for scope mounting. I have the two piece Accushots on both my CFXs and they work great. If you want to try the two piece mounts, be sure to order the 4 screw premium model. Either way the Accushots, one or two piece should resolve your mounting issues.
