For all you guys who don't have any online buying willpower.
« on: August 10, 2007, 04:17:04 PM »
To all you guys with itchy fingers, I kept my cool.  I know how to do it.  I was looking at Cabelas with my points waiting to be spent looking and staring at the RWS 48 and 52 busy finding out how quiet it could be by doing some emailing.  I looked at the Gamos.  I am waiting for an epiphany.  New Cabelas 18 miles away which I have never been too but no way I am not going to call the store and see if the on line items are in stock.  So then I reread the Whisper REview.  I could get one online at Cabelas but there is shipping etc .  but my points would cover most of it.  No way I can wait till I decide on the RWS besides I need to go to the other house do some chores and wait patiently for the muskrat.  The Whisper wispered in my subconcious and I looked on line again the way I used to look at the big fall Sears Catalog  (before most of you guys times).  No online stuff.  So I decided to call my old Denny Dennis Sporting goods which just happens to be on the way to the house and asked what was in stock  Well the Whisper was in stock almost the same as the online price.  Of course the guy did not know what it was.  So it is only a little out of the way.  Waitied at the counter for 15 minutes.  Great place to go to but the sales guys just hang around and BS.  Finally,  one wanders over and asks what I want.  Of course I could not see it in the new cartons and I thought just my luck it is gone.  Oh gee another low priced BEEMAN--mental slap in the head that is how this all started with the SS1000.  No way I will leave.  The guy says a what and I tell him again and he goes into the back and comes out with one.  30 seconds later off to the check out but no ONLINE purchases.  Of course the MRS. will not see it either.  Couple more errands and I finally arrive at the house.  Quick buritto and I open up the box. Calmly read the sketchy directions with the Spanish Subtitles. Take a look and poke at it a bit--muzzle break shroud looks bigger than the one on my Solo.  But I remember the review and I figure even though I don't have a rigid cleaning rod I can use my Beeman little Merino Wool cleaniing pellets.  Dieseling will be a thing of the past but first hook up the Laptop and order Grt III from Charlie Tuna.  I go outside tighten screws (quickly finding out that my new Bsquare screwdriver kit does not have the big torx bit but I find one in the bit driver set) and stuff three little wool pellets in using a bamboo skewer since these are tough to get in  thinking i will shoot them out into a bucket or something while hoping the three would come out.  The barrel is nice and shiny and I wipe a some oil off the the barrel thinking I will stop deseiling in its tracks.  Forget the shoot into something sight in on the target area by the tree and admire the fiber optic sights like I did on the QB 78 a couple of weeks ago.  I aim at the plywood backing 17 yards away and squeeze wondering what the trigger will be like.  Pull a little harder and then CRAAAAAACKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!! echo echo echo!   I must have scared  anything and everything within a mile. Leaving on a jet plane --Fly by in Top Gun.  hOLY Mackrel Andy.  I thought boy am I one stealthy hunter.  This is going to suck big time.  I hate to see what it will be like with a pellet.Quiet my blank.  If this is 52% sound reduction I hate to hear the real thing.  Anyway I did not have to go in to change my underwear.  Pretty soon the light ringing in my ears quit.  I thought gees I hope I did not break the spring.  But here is the advantage of my no online steadfastness--I can always take it back tomorrow for a refund.  PLan B now is to look for the heaviest pellets.  No problem I just bought a bunch of Gamo's on Wedsnesday. The were for my .22s DUH!! No way am I going to put one of those raptors in it. Still no problem I rumaged around and found a fresh tin of Cro Magnums, Silver Bears, and RAm Jets.  Wish I had some Kodiaks to quiet this thing down to a cannon.  Well Ram Jet is the heaviest.  Compared to the F 16 Merino Balls this was a twang and hardly a whisper and the spring still worked. Wow!!  I am rolling now.  Looking good now compared to 10 minutes ago.  A few more at the box  through the fiber optic sights and I go back in and unwrap the scope.  I only buy these things because I need to plastic wrapping to use with CA on my pen finishes.   Surprise BSA 3x9 x40 mildot with parallax correction down to 10 yds.  I don't remember that in the review.   Looks pretty clear and I can focus it.  Sure beat that Powerline 3x9 which does not focus and I can barely see through.Worked on getting it sighted in at about 17 yds.  Took a while to get i pretty well lined out.  The trigger beats the one on the Beeman ss1000 even though it is heavy but it is steady.  If I can tune it it will be one quiet little guy.  Kept putting some rounds through it till muskrat time.  Took out the Solo checked the zero--pumped up loaded the magazine and waited. Almost got him tonight but he came out 15 minutes after dusk in the dark tree shadow from the west onto the lake.  He did not move into the light colored water out of the shadows.  I did need to check in the scope to make sure it was not a duck lots of nice critters around here.  I ID 'd him and followed looking for a shot at 45 to 50 yds  but he got behind the cedar tree.  Next time Tuesday night.  Tomorrow I can play with the Whisperrrrrr!  Checked email and CDT already has one ready to ship.  Anyway the important thing here is I have online shopping willpower. I wonder how far those Merino balls went.

Congrat's John! I think you will pleased with the performance of the Whisper, especially after she gets broken in. I guarantee you will be amazed with the GRT-III trigger, the difference is almost beyond description. The trigger is ultra simple to install.

I use the Beeman cleaning pellets too, after I have done a thourough cleaning of the barrel conventionally. I too have experienced the CRACK of a new rifle with those pellets on the first pass through, LOL.
