Hot Weather...
« on: July 19, 2006, 06:30:37 AM »
Hello...

Is it possible to do any damage to a springer rifle shooting in this extreme hot weather?  Temps in the mid to high 90's. Thanks...

Rabbit:

I feel odd, somehow, responding to an entity with a name I associate with a source of wholesome protien........

I use spring-piston air rifles with conventional metallic mainsprings for hunting in temperatures that range from 114 degrees in the California Low Desert summers to 19 degrees in the late fall and early winter in the High Desert and mountainous areas.

If there is a problem associated with heat, other than POI shift, I haven't discovered it yet during my 25 years of hunting with these rifles.

The rifles generate plenty of heat during discharge as it is.  I forget what the exact amount is but 2K springs to mind.  If that is the case, I can't see how 90 more degrees of ambient heat will hurt things much.

But hey, what do I know?  I'm one of those guys who doesn't have a problem leaving his spring-piston rifle cocked during long treks across the desert, too. I also hunt in below freezing temps with them.

Hunting, of course, is different than a plinking session, but I've don plenty of plinking in temps over 90 degrees and haven't had any issues in doing so.
