Went Bird Huntin :)
« on: August 29, 2007, 02:38:42 PM »
Went back to the duck farm today, except this time I was lookin for birds instead of G-hogs.  The weapon of choice was my B26-2 .177 teamed up with the GAMO Tomahawks that she loves so much.

Was a simple setup,,,,, I sat inside one of the large breeder duck barns close to a window and popped the starlings as they landed on a telephone pole.  Distance from my hideout was 20 yards.

The birds were very wary and even though I was concealed fairly well I still had a lot of birds that were going to land flare off at the last minute.  Was a little frustrating at times, especially since it was hot as hell inside that barn, but I had good shooting for about an hour before the birds got wise.

Total for the day was 17 starlings and 1 pigeon.  I couldn't retrieve 4 of the starlings for photos,,,, they did a death glide and wound up in a gooey duck poop drainage ditch that I certainly wasn't going into, but I did take a couple of pics of the other starlings and the pigeon.

I did see a couple of G-hogs during my hunt, but I let them be since this hunt was for birds  :)

Great shootin Jeff,

Great Photo of your baby and her trophies.

Even though you have a target rich environment there, those little buggers are sure hard to hit, always on the move. Good shootin Jeff !

Barry,,, the GAMO scope ramp that I installed on the B26-2 worked out absolutely beautifully !!  Put the scope right up where I needed it and the gun is now a pleasure to shoot.  Best money I ever spent, especially since I did not want to cut downt he comb.

I'll enthusiastically second the motion on Jeff's opinion! Except it was the best money I didn't have to spend, since I stole from the CFX and gave to the B26-2 ;~D In my case, the guns were both better off for the switchover.

My question for you, Jeff, is how do you decide what particular quarry you'll be hunting before heading out? Flip o' the coin? Monitoring reports from the farm? Enhanced satellite imaging piped in from NOAA or NASA? LOL!!

Hey Bryan,

What gun I bring to the farm pretty much just depends on what I feel like shooting that day.  The main farm always has G-hogs but not always starlings.  The breeder farm, down the dirt road, doesn't have all that many ground hogs but for some reason always has starlings all over the place, so it really just depends what I want to shoot that day.

I would bring more than one rifle with me, but my wanderings take me a long way from the truck most of the time and I don't like to leave a rifle unattended, although I'm sure noone would mess with my truck.
