how do most of you guys shoot? bench? off hand?...
« on: October 05, 2007, 10:16:20 AM »
I really like to shoot off a bench but my retired neighbor has come over about 4 times a week for the past few weeks asking if "we" are gonna shoot tonight. Well I only have one bench and a whole lotta guns so I have taken to off hand and elbow rested on the picnic table to compete with him on the bench. Wow, very hard off hand but rewarding when you quit swaying long enough to get a shot off. I tried prone but it is a pian to cock laying down and it lends itself to me wanting to take a nap!  So how do most of you guys shoot?

Shooting rest if I'm sighting in or testing pellet's. 80% of the time I'm lurking around the wood's hunting. :) Ed

I do most of my shooting from a bench with a sand bag to rest the fore arm of what ever I'm shooting.  However, it seems that lately I've been doing more shooting without a rest, my Talon goes with me most of the time :-).  Impromptu position of choice is probably kneeling, the Talon is fast and forgiving enough that I can pull the trigger in passing and still hit my target.  Fortunately, my POI doesn't seem to change with different holds.  Later.

Like Ed I do almost all my shooting while roaming around the woods or the duck farm I shoot at.  I'll use something to lean on if it's available, but 9 times outa 10 I'm shooting offhand with no rest.  The key with shooting unsupported is not to fight the inevitable movement in the sight picture,,, just relax, breath slowly, concentrate and pull the trigger when the crosshairs cross the target.  I'm not saying that I have that technique mastered, I'm just saying that's the theory.

A lot of my shots are placed offhand in the standing posistion...many times leaning against something for support.

Then there's a favorite sniper posistion I have, where I am able to sit comfortably. The barrel goes into a "v" that is formed by the vinyl-coated chainlink fence. This is very important in order to land the 75~100 yard shots that my 350 .22 can perform. There are hundreds of Vs to choose from...so I just pick the V that gets me feeling comfortable. I have a 4 inch piece of garden hose that I've slipped over the 350 barrel so it doesn't get scratched, and it also helps with cocking. Just the tip of the barrel pokes through the fence, so that if anybody looks, they won't see the "barrel of a gun" sticking through the fenceline, which runs for blocks.

Then there's the what I call "combo position". Istand behind a blind that I have set up, and rest the barrel on a nice cushy cloth thats folded up many times to give a lot of cushion to the barrel movement. The cloth rests on a crossbar of the blind. This position has proved to be very deadly.

If things are too quiet...which is rare...then I take shots out of an upstairs window, with the window open about 3~4 inches. Me sitting in a chair or on the carpet, barrel resting on the window sill, but not poking out of the window, so if somebody happens to look they don't see the "barrel of a gun" pointing out of a window, causing neighborhood panic.

Like Chuck, if I shot laying down I would for sure take a nap.. lol. I shoot 99% of the time on a bench rest but when I do go out hunting squirrel, I always try and find a tree, fence, or something to steady me shakes with.. lol.

I usually rest my left elbow on a table for groups, but if I'm just messing around plinking its offhand. The few times I actually got to do prone, I just rolled on my back and sat up to cock it :)
