Highly debating a purchase...
« on: September 21, 2007, 03:55:11 AM »

Im highly debating ordering a QB 78 from mike at Flying Dragon and i was wondering is the only real difference between the deluxe and the normal 78 the prettier stock and bolt handle? I plan on stripping the finish off the stock anyway and doing my own custom finish with it so that deters me away from the deluxe. Also... is that tuned 78 for $125 on Mikes website tuned for max power or do i need to specifically ask for that tune at extra cost? just curious if anyone knew... thanks much

-Tim

P.S.

(Im leaning towards .22 cal for better impact on the squirrels and i have 3 ground hogs that i can get within 20 yards of that i need to take care of... im in love with airguns what can i say. if i had an infinite source of money id buy a condor but for right now... a QB seems like a nice addition to my arsenal. Im really not happy with my gamo varmint hunter and am about fed up with it. i spend all my time sighting it in with a shock resistant scope and i just waste tin upon tin of pellets. im completely turned off to springers. wow! what a rant for a PS!)

I'm not sure, but I think the deluxe has better blueing also. Definately a better chance of getting a better stock to refinish. I would spend the extra$ and get the deluxe, you'll have a nicer end result.

I agree with Mike.... spend the extra 10 bucks for the deluxe you wont be disappointed. As far as the power levels go.. My Mike Mellick tuned QB78D .177 caliber will consistantly shoot 830 fps with CPL's and is a pinpoint accurate shooter.... it is so good that I took out a Bee that landed just under my shoot n see target at 35 yards and basically made it explode. Mike has told me he can get almost the same performance out of the .22 caliber but and this is a big but... it will be a gas guzzler and your shot count per 2 carts will be very short. If you went for a .22 that is maxed out power wiseyou might consider getting a gas tube extension and bulk filling it will up the shot count some.

Tim I have two of Mike's QB's including the QB-78-D model. When you buy from Mike you can't go wrong. He is straight forward and a super guy to deal with as everybody here can attest to. And the "D" model is certainly worth the difference.

You won the debate...you picked the right caliber (.22) and the right stock (delux) as well as a stand-up guy to deal with (Mike).

CO2 performs better in .22...get more energy per shot.

The delux stock is a little fuller dimentioned and better shaped.  It's the same wood type, so there is going to be wide variations in grain, but none of the delux stocks I've looked at have had the "uglies" that some of the standrd stocks have.  I don't think they make any promises, but it does seem the delux wood's quaility is a bit better (maybe becasue they have to use slighloy larger blanks to make the stock, so the really ugly little "sticks" can't be used?).

If your intention is to refnish, realize it's a roll of the dice...can't really tell what is under that factory finish until you strip it...might be beutiful, might be plain, and it might be butt ugly.

Hey Tim

I have 2 of Mikes tuned QB78-D's, one in .177 and one in .22,,,, absolutely love em both.  Can't say enough about Mikes work.  When I ordered the rifles I asked Mike to tune them for maximum power possible while still maintaining accuracy needed for hunting.  I was not disappointed.  Both guns are scary accurate and powerful.

The other day I chrony'd both guns and was getting an average of 830 FPS for the .177 and 720 for the .22

I've been averaging around 30 full power shots using 2 C02 cartridges for the .177 and around 20-25 shots for the .22 cal.  Last squirrel I shot with the .22 was 25 yards away and one shot took him down for good.

If you plan on hunting with it I'd recommend the .22,, although the .177 would get the job done too.

A quick answer yes....basically all is needed is a bulk fill end cap with a quick disconnect nipple on the cap. Then you can use the bigger paintball tanks to charge up the gun. And like I said earlier you can get an extension tube and have more shots per fill.

Yes go delux. also the .22 is a good choice. Mines shooting right about 16fpe... Also with these guns a .177 would do just fine with the game your talking about also not having really any trajectory issues that the .22 would have. I can sight im my .177 at 40 yards and there really minimal hold over. They are really scary accurate and with such an accurate gun a ton of fpe isnt really nessessary as you can be about 95% shure of a headshot on all occations (long as ur prey holds still :) )

The shape of the Deluxe stock is different than the standard model, has a different balance to it. I can set the rifle up for maximum power but you most likely won't like it that way, the velocity goes up and then back down which changes the POI quite abit, better to have a few less fps and a steady velocity and more accuracy than more fps and less accucracy.

you know this rifle 100% more than i do Mike. I responded to your email as well. This rifle will probably become my primary and its main purpose will be hunting. Mostly squirrels and rabbits but i have some groundhogs that already have their graves dug. I just need a rifle accurate and powerful enough to get the deed done with a well placed shot at the proper distance.
