Scoping the IZH 61
« on: December 19, 2007, 01:25:33 PM »
I'm sure a lot of you own an IZH 61 and know what a great little rifle it is.  My aging eyes make me find other solution seeing the sights and the target, so I usually scope my rifles, and adjust the objective so that I can shoot without my glasses.  My problem with the IZH has always been limited otions for scope mounting.

I  tried a BKL 253 but I could never get a comfortable eye relief even with the compact scopes, and the mount got in the way of the magazine release button on top of the receiver. The other problem was stopping the scope from sliding backwards.  Even though the IZH 61 is a mild shooter, the mount wouldn't stay in place.

Then I tried the Crosman 459MTC Intermounts, but the scope would rotate around the barrel.  The misfit  (0.438 vs. 0.515) wouldn't allow a firm hold or a solid dovetail.

Then I found it.  The Air Venturi BJ Intermount.

It was designed to fit Benjamin Sheridan pumpers but sits between the front of the IZH 61 receiver and the back of the barrel clamp as if it were designed for the IZH.  Trouble is, the intermount's ID will fit from 0.540 to 0.556 and the OD of the IZH barrel is 0.515.

Guitar picks to the rescue.  I found thin picks in the pick box that measured 0.020 and cut them to fit inside the intermount.  The wont copress and they'll give you a good grip, I mean solid.

The picatinny rail gives you the option to use any sized scope, and nothing gets in the way of the magazine realease button or the side lever.

Thanks for sharing that info Michael. I think others in the past have asked about alterative mounting for the 61.
