No I am not talking about the weather. I am speaking of my hunting dry spell. A dry spell that start before the early deer gun hunt (late Oct.).
A dry spell that went right thru the regular deer gun season (Thanksgiving week) and the late deer gun hunt (early Dec.). You are correct in assuming that I got skunked big time last year. Life without venison is not a good thing.
This dry spell includes any critter that may cross thru my yard or within safe shooting areas of my yard. In simple terms it got cold here in Wisconsin and things went into hiding, until yesterday that is.
We had some warm temp's this weekend and all of the snow melted and the tree rats came out to play and eat. This was not a good thing for the tree rats considering I have not seen anything to shoot at for three months.
Tree rat #1 was found sitting on the limb of a tree no more than 20 yards away. Ninja squirrel or not, a twenty yard shot is a death sentence.
All I had handy at the time were Crossman pointeds. So I load the Shadow with a pointed, line up the cross hairs with his beady little eye and gently squeezed the trigger. The next thing I saw was the nutter laying at the base of the tree doing his last few twitches of life.
This nutter never even let go of the nut he had in his mouth.
Tree rat #2 presented a little more of a challenge. This guy was 35 yards out and 20 feet up in the neighbors oak tree, a distance and area I have shot at many times in the past. This guy obviously saw his buddy hit the ground and never move again. So with that in mind he decided to play hide and seek. After chasing him around the tree with the scope for several minutes, he must have gotten a little winded and came to a stop on my side of the tree. Long enough to take a shot. The next sound I heard was the shot hitting tree bark. Nutter ran up the tree, down the other side and stopped near the bottom of the tree. Three seconds later he fell over backwards off the tree trunk. Then I realized the sound of bark was the pellet going thru the nutter. On this guy I pulled the shot, a lot, but in a good direction. Was aiming for his head and ended up with a heart shot.
