Pellet trap
« on: January 24, 2008, 08:01:48 AM »
Well, I have seen the work you guys are doing in your shops and I got the itch...

Here is a pellet trap I have been working on to hold a standard piece of paper (8-1/2" x 11") with a deflector plate in the back to knock the pellets down into a removeable tray. I will be utilizing a clip on the front, similar to those used on clipboards to hold the paper. The case will be manufactured from 14 ga. steel and the deflector plate will be either 11 ga or 7 ga (depending on what I have laying around in the shop!)

I will post a pic of it when it is finished. What do you guys and gals think a good color for this thing would be? I am going to powdercoat it with an epoxy for durability.

Nice layout and creative mockup of your trap. looks like it should work nicely. I need to get on one myself.

That's going to be a very nice box Ron, you wouldn't want to make another one would you? I have thought of making one similar, but with the deflector plate curved.

Mike,

If I am making one, it really wouldn't take much longer to make two.

My take on the deflector is this: If it is curved, the area of the deflector closest to the base will almost be parallel to the back of the trap, thus providing an opportunity for a direct ricochet back toward the shooter. What do you think? Is curved better than angled? Give me some input.

I was thinking of having about 3"-4" dead space at the bottom, so the curve would still be high enough. Also a piece angled back at the front, going up the 3-4" dead space, to help catch any stays. I figured set it up for the paper to run horizonal, instaed of vertical, to keep the hight down. If any of that makes sence.

Nice idea and on my trap's I put a 2in. high angled deflector plate at the bottom front, just to keep em from skipping off the bottom and headed back at me. :( Ed

You got to watch out for the ones that try to come back. I made a few spinners out of golf balls, they spun great, but would send the pellet back at you. I took those off, but golf balls hanging from a string, didn't send'm back.

Ron that's a nice looking trap and well thought out to be very functional.  If it’s just as easy to make 2 of them how about making 3, hehe.  BTW my favorite colors are blue and green.

Heck, what about 4?  Just kidding, I use a couple steel electrical outlet boxes filled with duct seal, about $1.29 for the boxes, and another $4 for the duct seal.  Shot it with my 40+ fpe Talon and also with my Sumatra and my Career....never bounced back and no holes in the back.  The only downside of duct seal is that you eventually have to clean it out or replace it...., but you can put a boatload of pellets into it before that happens.  I also have a cheapo Beeman pellet trap with the deflector plate idea.  Works good for my 500 fps match rifle, but it makes a loud clank when you shoot it.

Ron, that looks like a winnerto me. I made few a while back it evolved into a winner too, and I'm getting a lot of use out it.  I used some duct seal in the back at the base of the angle plate, it stops anything from bouncing out. I got tired of replacing the clips so I used fun tack on the corners to hold the target. Just a couple of ideas, and I think green would work.
