I originally had the Varmint Hunter scope package and I didn't like anything about it for reasons previously posted so I started messing around.
Preferably, I would like the laser center mounted, low, clamped to the barrel, about at the end of the stock. I tried the muzzle (not shown) but it had it's drawbacks. So I hacked up a mount from a $6 Tasco I found at wal mart and fastened it in the screw hole for the rear open sight. It's pretty low and doesn't interfere with the scope, but it's still not centered and it makes access to the breech a bit cumbersome. At the same time though, it is inline with the round and scope for more distance than anything that I have seen thus far.(other than mounted on the muzzle because it is slightly offset.)
If the light looks like a Mini Maglite, that's because it is. I didn't like the Varmint Hunter light much either. It wasn't bright enough for anything more than 5-10 yards. So I cut the pressure switch off of it and retro-fiited it to a LED Minimag. Bright with magnification!
Nothing that I have done is perfected yet because I'm by far not a machinist, but I do know that the rats that were eating up my orange trees are all now suffering from rigormortis.
