Help Me!......i'm stupid!
« on: March 25, 2008, 12:18:38 PM »
i am just getting curious with the pcp guns. All my airgun experience is with springers.  i noticed the discovery comes with a pump.  how difficult is it to pump these rifles?...is the pump gonna wear me out (i'm over 50 years old) to the point i won't be able to pick the gun up?  is the pump that comes in this kit a good pump or is it just some piece of junk they throw in to make it look like you're getting a deal?  i notice these hand pumps carry a pretty penny on the market ($200 +).  Looking for advice from YOU experts.  is this a good gun to start with or is it just a niche for crosman loyals?  all advice is welcome.  Thanx.

Hey Roger,

The gun only fills to 2000 psi so the first fill up will be a little rough. Your next fill won't be bad even if you shoot it down to 1200 psi. The best way I think to resolve your issue would be if you have a chrony and shoot it till it starts to drop off rapidly check were your presure is and your shot count then you will know were to stop and refill. For me I had a QB with a 2000 psi fill and I have a tank but didn't enjoy dragging around the tank so I sold it. The guy who bought it loves it?????? To each his own :)

Pump is OK to start with

As previously mentioned, the first fill is a bear. That's because you're going from zero to 2,000 ps. I recall something like 120 pumps? After that, you're going from 1,200 psi back up to 2,000. About 75 stokes will do. Not too bad to doit all in one shot. You won't want to touch one off right after that - wait a couple minutes for the heart rate to drop a bit.

I'm just shy of 50. It's no problem for me but I could see how a 3,300 psi scuba tank would be the way to go. The pump is a decent pump and should be fine to start with. The gun is great - a lot of fun. Gun runs $235 and pump is another $160 or so. You can find a used Scuba tank and filll probe for that though. The gun takes a standard foster fitting.

I'm over 50 and I've pumped up my Disco dozens of times. Three or four fills in one shooting session gets a little old but for the most part it's no big deal. Two fills is more than 50 shots and that's usually enough for me. I usually fill up when I'm done so it's ready for next time. I gotta say, I'm very happy with the pump.

I'm also well over 50 and have no trouble pumping the Disco.  I just filled it tonight, from 1000 to 2000 psi and it took me all of 4 minutes and I wasn't in a hurry.  The pump should last a very long time since it is rated at 3600 psi.

Since it has been so easy pumping I'm thinking I need more of a workout........like a Sumatra 2500, lol.

I would highly recommend the Disco as a first PCP.  Hard hitting and a very accurate gun with no recoil.

I like the Disco but I went with the AirForce Talon SS I love that gun. as for pumps I just went and got a scuba set up after my buddy told me it took him 15 pumps to get 100c in his Disco, I shoot to much to pump.

Roger, you will find out real quick if you like to pump or not...:) If you really like to shoot a PCP and enjoy its accuracy and generally good FPE, you will eventually get a tank for your fills. You have to remember that the Crosman Disco is for people who want to experience shooting a PCP without the extra funds it takes for all the other hardware. Like David Kirby, he started out with springers and went to PCP's and really loved to shoot them. Then he went back to springers and then returned to PCP's as his choice of shooters. He also likes to shoot in FT events and the PCP really shines with accuracy. I own a FX Cyclone .22 and it has a rotary clip with 8 shots. On a full fill. 2800 psi, I get about 35 shots per fill, on the high setting. It develops up to 30 fpe on the high setting and is a good air rifle for hunting. Around 900 FPS is the average. It is very accurate but not as accurate as some of the PCP's made for FT shooting. But as far as the Disco goes it is an inexpensive PCP to wet your whistle on..:) Gene

Personally Roger, I would not buy one..:) But that is my own personal preference. I am not saying there is something wrong or is below par but that style of PCP is not my bag of tea..:) There is no reason why it should not last you a very long time. Crosman is fantastic on warranties and support. They will never go away while you or me are still kicking.. hehe

You are dead on Gene ; The Discoverys are an OK PCP  for folks who want to tinker  or who are OK with "hunting" accuracy  with an OK "hunting" trigger, If you want a ready to shoot PCP spend a little more and get one that has a quality barrel on it. No guarantees with them either , but you have a better chance of getting a nice one that shoots where you want. kirby

My take is that it really depends on where you're coming from and where you want to go, or grow into?
I personally have never spent more than $300 for a gun and I probably never will.
I have over 30 of them and like to shoot them all for one reason or another. Springers pneumatics or pcp I love them all. I'm not dedicated to any one camp.
I mostly target shoot and the more expensive gun I buy the further out I shoot. I doubt I'll ever compete with anyone other than friends and myself and I don't hunt.
For those reasons.
The Disco is definitely one of the nicest guns I own. Maybe I just got a good one (fast, recoilless & accurate). But even if it weren't I'd keep her due to the after market support. Tinkering is definitely a key word Kirby. I'm betting that any shortcomings the gun has (and it does) they will eventually be ironed out with help from our extended community.
I guess it depends on how much money you have, how much you're willing to wager on a bet you'll like a gun or willing to allocate to air gunning.
Maybe I'm stupid but like most of my Crosmans I plan on keeping mine and morphing it forever.
N.E.Dan
My favorite gun of all time is the last one I bought!!

Well put Dan..:) You have your principles on price limits and thanks to Crosman you were able to purchase a PCP within your budget. And like you I do mostly target shooting and depending on which air gun I pick up to shoot generally depends on the distance I shoot. I love all kinds of targets and get plenty of self gratification from hitting my mark with the air gun I am shooting at the moment..:) Also like you I own over 30 air guns now and see no light at the end of the tunnel.. hehe  I am a hopeless addict who attends the AGA meetings here regularly like all the rest of us..:)
