Beeman Field Target Special

Finally was able to really spend some time with the Diana 34 .177 testing the 8-9 different pellets I have around.  The most accurate for me was the Beeman Field Target Special.  Nearly no difference in placement from 25 to 35 yards.  I haven't done any serious testing at ranges further than 35 yards for two reasons:  I don't have the accuracy I need to effectively hunt beyond 35 yards and I like the energy at 35 yards for a humane kill (pending good shot placement).

I don't have a chrono but with the info I've gleaned off the net I'm guessing that I'm getting in the mid 700's with the 9.3gr roundnose Beeman Filed Target Special.  I realize that shot placement is about 85% of my hunting effectiveness, but has anyone hunted with these pellets and how effective are they at the kill, range up to 35 yards?

Rabbit season has officially opened here and I'm planning on going out later today.  I'm the type that really doesn't care if I get anything and look at it more as a nice walk on the river.  I'll take the roll-up stool, mini-thermos, binoculars, and camera, along with the Diana.  Just the peace and quiet is a reward of hunting, at least for me.

Thanks for any feedback on my question.

I like your style of hunting.  I was not always that way, but as I have "matured" (another way of saying become an old timer) I find that I really don't enjoy shooting stuff near as much as I just enjoy the outdoors, the stalk, and trying to blend in with nature.  I very often just sight in on something and say "bang - I coulda had ya if I'd wanted".  I have spent many days sitting in my duck blind and just taking pictures and watching the wildlife through binoculars. The younger guys think I am nuts, but I enjoy it.  We have lots of wildlife drifting through our property and have seen bobcats and found cougar tracks along with the usual suspects. Neighbors claim to have seen the big cat but I haven't.  I have been thinking of trying to set up a camera and get his picture. We have some really big coons around but so far they have left me alone, so I have left them alone.  That could change - and I would not use a pellet gun.

Regarding your pellets, I have found JSB Exacts to be the most accurate in most of my rifles, and generally, CPLs a close 2nd.  Another brand that seems to be okay for plinking has been the Gamo Hunters.  The best part is that the Hunters are cheap and available almost everywhere.  Most hunters that I have talked with seem to favor the round nose pellets for hunting and really LOVE the JSB  Predators.  I have tested these in the guns that I would hunt with and found them to group very much like the standard JSB round nose.  That is convenient - to be able to go from a plinking pellet to a more expensive hunting pellet, if so inclined, without having to resight the gun.  Maybe you have already tested these, but if not, you may want to give the Predators a try.

I enjoy hearing a good "hunting story" now and then without all the "blood and guts" that seems to be in most stories.

Keep on keeping on and enjoy your outings........

Cheers
