Doing a few odd jobs in the gun room this afternoon.  Too hot to shoot.  Based on sage advice from a well know SC air gun guru and general good guy (thanks Gene) I modified the spring compressor.  A 12" piece of allthread now goes through a 1" coupling bolt  countersunk and epoxied into a 3 x 3 in block of wood.  This block is u-bolted to the baseboard.   A 1/2 in hole is drilled through a 2x4 block and backed with two locking nuts and a  large washer so that the metal end of the allthread does not pass through the block.  The block is a treated pine "skid", ie, scrap lumber from the local Lowe's and is slotted.  I have oriented the slot vertically and allow the pusher block with a small felt pad to ride in the slot to make slight vertical adjustments.  Much more solid than the previous arangement.  Can get about 8 in of travel out of the all thread if needed.  New, correctly sized Maccari seal will probably arrive Monday.  Then time to try to get the lubes right and re-assemble.
