why an airgun?
« on: September 07, 2008, 05:31:59 PM »
My family all ask this given my background. Never rifle hunted only archery and handgun. Handloader, must be a common background to many here. Target rifle stays in my memory the most, chasing accuracy for it's own sake and solving some really odd problems was the most rewarding.

The physics of airguns intrigues and the knowledge of those here is both helpful and can be hard to relate to.

Never posted to a group before and have been trying, but the environment is foreign to me.

Have in the shop 7x12, drill press, assorted home machine instruments, hand tools ect. along with timber working machinery. I like to shoot but love the more technical aspects of the hobby. The plan is to follow ideas found here and the crosman forum and see what comes of it. The 2240 is in pieces behind the lathe, the disco is back together after inspection, my wife hates that :)

I would like to try to return some value to the forum that has been given to me, just not quite sure how to go about it. I really enjoy reading all gates, however at a point it starts to feel selfish always taking and not giving back considering how much work folks do to keep the forum here.

Will press on and perhaps stumble on something useful,

dave

Hey Dave, just pitch in where you can.I'm sure you're not selfish. Why air guns? Because: they're fun, they allow us to shoot where you can't burn powder, they're inherently safer than more powerful projectiles, they improve our trigger control on firearms with practice, inexpensive to shoot, they're fun, we get to learn at an accelerated rate because of the volume we can shoot, makes a great hobby, it's fun, lot's of models  to try, you get to make new friends in the air gunning community,The GTA forums, you become a better more knowledgeable shooter, and of course it's just plain wholesome fun.

Hey Dave,,,,,

All you need to hang out here is a love of airguns and it's easy to see you have that.   Besides,,, from reading your post it's evident you have an awful lot of experience to share that will be of great value to GTA.   I'll be looking forward to your future posts.......

Dave, just include us with what projects you work on and pics of your stable of air guns. That is what we call giving back. Enjoy yourself here and just make yourself at home.

Hope to see you post more often. OH! and buy the little lady a box of chocholates...:)

Hey Fix,

I laugh so much reading this forum my wife thinks I'm nuts. Probably am, I was just reading .22 bullit diameter vs. pellet dia. as they were the same back in the day. Seems a shame we can't take advantage of the tons of .22 RF barrels out there for use in our projects. 1 in 14  I believe is common, but could be wrong.

Was sitting here contemplating what it would take to swage lead pellets in the proper dia. with Rockchucker press? The lead wire is at Midwest. Some might poo-poo on this, but many years ago it was said " you could never load a round in your garage as good as Remington!"

The corbin dies are expensive, but could it be done with modified standard dies? Might be fun to try.

Won't work. Air gun pellets are usually .218 wheras .22 bullets are normally .223 or .224.

Yes, Thanks MR.Progun

I am aware of the diameters which was why I brought up pellet swaging. A silly idea I'm sure. Had thoughts of making use of the abundant rim fire technology. Custom pellets would be expensive.
Considering the tinkering going on out there up to and including making barrels perhaps not so silly. Time will tell.

hello MR. FIX,

I thought it might be a fun idea to play with :)

All of my bang sticks have been given to my children, Except a SS Springfield .45. I do have a bunch of loading equipment and supplies. Am allways looking for something useful for air guns. May have gone out in left field on this one:)

Guy's post all of your ideas, you may be looking at things differently and be on to something. Don't think an idea is dumb, Lord knows I've had some hair brained ideas, that worked out. So share what you got on your mind.
