Thinking of a Sumatra 2500 or something in that price range.
« on: September 10, 2008, 09:08:49 PM »
So folks, I'm hoping to be able to afford a Sumatra 2500 with the 500cc reservoir. I'm not sure this is the gun for me, so any suggestions in that same price range would be appreciated. ALSO I'm interested in ways to reduce the sound from this thing. I hear it's pretty loud and may freak the neighbors. I definitely won't be buying for a while, but any ideas of what I can have someone do to modify this gun (or whatever y'all suggest) would be approved.

Don't think you're going to find anything comparable for that price with that kind of power.  Quieting down the Korean guns is a problem, if noise is a primary issue, you might need to consider something else.  It's also tough finding a repeater for that kind of money, although you might get close in a used gun.  Some of the older Air Arms occasionally sell for around $600, but that's usually the single shot.  My S400E is one of those, in .177 it will do 27 fpe with 16 gr. Eun Jins, and is very quiet. Also incredibly accurate.   Oddly (?) enough, I don't think the .22 version is that much more powerful.  If you NEED the raw power, you either buy a Korean gun and live with the noise, or spend LOTS more money :-).  I believe a tricked out Air Force Condor from Talon Tunes would get you power and quiet, but in a single shot and for about 3X the bucks.

Guess I should have asked this first, what's your primary anticipated use?  Hunting, back yard plinking, competition?  There ARE rifles that can do it all, but if 90% of your shooting will be in the back yard at paper, there's no reason for a 60+ fpe .25.  I recently realized that I have no real need for a 40+ fpe .22, so now I only have 2 rifles, both .177's.  Granted, they're both at the top of the heap powerwise for a .177, and would be considered magnums if they were springers.  But by zeroing in on what I really wanted/needed, I now have 2 world class rifles that will let me do it all.  If freaking out the neighbors is an issue, I think you'd be better off starting with something else, rather than trying to make the Sumatra into something it was never meant to be.  And it would probably cost less, too.  Sorry if that wasn't much help.

Well I admit I >WANT< the power, not need it. Possible occasional hunting use and a little bit of target shooting/showing off. :-) I have a great Gamo Shadow in .177 with a CDT tune that I got off the classifieds, and that's the main gun I use for target shooting and rodent control. SO none of the guys who do the PCPs would be able to replace the barrel or quiet this thing down? I know that something that could silence it and be installed separately could violate laws meant for firearms inadvertently so I don't want to get into trouble or get someone else into trouble.

Just tell me one thing about the sound of the Sumatra 2500.-is it much louder than a 22 rimfire?

Try a Ar2078 tuned by Mike Melick.  Hard hitter fairly quiet and awesomely accurate  My .22 is getting 30 shots at about 700 fps with the 12g powerlets.  I am hoping someone will post one with paint ball tube attached!

Sumatra (.22 using heavy weights) will get to just about 55-60 foot pounds as issued.  Like my QB's, but if power is the main goal, it's no contest.

Should I get it in .22 or .25? What will give me the farthest range? And, what will I need to buy for it to be able to fill it using a scuba tank. It says it comes with Includes 2 6-shot rotary clips, 2 fill probes (BSP & SAE), spare o-rings for fill probes, UK valve conversion kit & a hex key for adjusting the cheekpiece. So dont I just need Scuba tank adapter and hose? Ive never had a pcp before. And what is a UK valve conversion kit? It comes with that and I have no clue what that is.

Just as you stated, adapter and a short hose.  Too long a hose wastes air, too short can be inconvenient to fill.  I have a 4 footer so I can lay the gun down in its case and leave the tank upright while filling.  Unfortunately that waste precious air.  In hide sight I probably should have gotten a 12-18" hose and just lay the tank on its side next to the gun case while filling or hold the gun while filling.  I'll probably do that with my other scuba fill adapter and leave it on my spare tank.

You can get a scuba adapters on ebay for cheap, I got my first one for 33 bucks including shipping and the same one from another seller for 24 including shipping.  I then added a stainless steel braided hose I got locally from a Paintball arena, but I think you can find high pressure grease hoses for cheaper.

Good Luck.
