Feinwerkbau Model 603 Junior
« on: September 11, 2008, 03:56:34 AM »
The rifle arrived from StraighShooters this morning, scoped and ready to shoot.  OSHA  paid a visit this week and finally wrapped up their business, so I had some time to take a few pics.

I hunt and shoot squirrels as humanely as I have skills for as the critters are quite destruction to my bamboo forest.  What I really enjoy is taking aim at an inamimate target and hitting it exactly where I want....over and over.  The 603 Junior is lighter than the regular match version of the 603 by ~2 or 3 pounds, so it will be easier on an old coot like me to haul around and shoulder.  I've got enough heavy artillery anyway.

This is my first match air rifle, so if anyone has any helpful suggestions please pass them along.

The rifle shipped doubled boxed and in a nice case.

Sould I remove the front sight?  The scope is a Bushnell 4200 8-32x40 duplex...same as on my HW97.

That's an extremely accurate rifle but lacks in power department. I suggest head shots only and up to 15-20 meters. Diopter sights are worthless in the woods so get a nice 4-12 scope for it, that way you can decide where in the squirrels head you want to place the shot  8)

Edit: Sorry, didn't see the second photo. You are good to go with that scope.

Edit 2: Now there were three photos, yes remove the front sight. A lower scope mount would also make it easier to get accurate shots at different distances.
If some is good and more is better - then too much is just right.

Scope is mounted on a BKL-271 one inch Droop Riser & BKL-254H 4 inch Cantilever High mount.  Eye relief is good but I may need a different butt plate....this one does not extend very far.

There are two minor defects in the laminate that will be addressed by a woodworking pal of mine.  Rough spots that need to be sanded.

Overall the workmanship is first rate as far as I can tell from the exterior.

You will absolutely love that single pumper!  What a magnificent rifle.

Of course, the scope is mounted to allow unfettered access to the loading port, which would not be possible with lower mounts or without the offset mounts.  I expect you will find that the rifle shoots at precisely 575 FPS  shot after shot, which is adequate for head shots on squirrels out to 20 yards at least.  If you want some very accurate match pellets, order up some Vogels in the Green tin, and perhaps some official 10-Meter targets if you're interested in serious paper punching.  Have you found the Pilkington site yet?

http://www.pilkguns.com/

Mr. Pilkington or one of the folks there who work on high end target shooters like your new beauty can tell you what you need to do to get the LOP exactly right for you.

And the laminate on that stock is not just wood.  It is a wood/synthetic laminate made not just to look good, but to be highly resistant to warping, as wood stocks may tend to do over time in different heat and humidity conditions, thus, affecting the rifle's accuracy.  The front globe shouldn't really interfere with the scope you have mounted.  Removing it will only be cosmetic.  If you do remove it, you should be careful to keep it and the rear diopter sight very safe, as they are valuable.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

must resist, Must Resist, MUST RESIST . . .

[J -  Please hurry up and get the LGR-U back to daddy.  My resistance is weakening (LOL).]

PS:  if they didn't send you the original rear diopter sights taken off when the scope was mounted, you should definitely ask for them.

Congratulations again!

LOL  Good luck resisting and thanks for the kind words.  I love the single pump and ratchet-like action at the end of the cocking cycle.

I have 2 sleeves of the Vogels Yellow...none of the Green. :0  I didn't think this rifle would do anything more than annoy a squirrel.

Thankfully the rear diopter sight was shipped along with the rifle.

The Vogel Yellows are lighter and are really meant as SPP pistol rounds.  The Vogel Orange (practice) and Green (Match) are both 8.3 gr, I believe.  I shoot a lot of the Vogel Orange pellets.  Very good quality and in recyclable packaging that can be returned for credit when empty.  If you ask, Pilkington will ship sleeves (5,000) or cases (10 sleeves) of the Green's in same lot number.  The consistency is excellent.  Looking forward to seeing some of your 10-shot groups.

Check w Pilkingtons, I'm pretty sure that someone makes/made a kit to lengthen the LoP of the Junior to be similar to the full size rifle.  Actually it was for the P70-jr, but the butt of the stock is the same.
BTW, I shoot the P-70-jr, and in my case, the LoP fits me just fine.

As was mentioned, package the front and rear sight and DO NOT LOOSE THEM.  I've seen too many FWB-300 where the owner scoped the rifle, and when it came time to sell...they can't find the sight.  That could make a BIG DENT in the resale value, as the sights are expensive to replace.

What are you going to shoot w a scope w that much magnification?
Or are you going to do like me, to see how small a target you can hit   :-)

N-joy the new toy

You don't have to check the local hunting regulations to shoot insects.  Roger (Bhawanna) suggests drilling small holes in a 2x4 and putting strike-anywhere kitchen matches in them, then trying to light the matches by shooting at the tip.  Roger has a pyro thing going, as we know, but he's a really decent guy.

You fellows are nuts.  :D

I got the Vogel Yellows for my Izzy 46.  I do have a tin of RWS Meisterkugeln 8.2 gr...
Guess I'll contact Pilkington's on Friday and get some sleeves & proper targets on the way.

I removed the Bushnell and replaced it with a Leupold Vari III EFR.  The eye relief is better.  Discovered that Craig had shimmed the Bushy with a piece of negative.  Removed it and will sight in tomorrow weather permitting.

There are still lots of biting insects here in SE Georgia...not as many bushy tailed rodents as there used to be....but lots of bugs.  I like the strike-a-match through a 2x4 idea too.  Have magnification...must hold steady.

I'll mention that when I call tomorrow, and I'll take care not to misplace the rear sight.  THe front one is staying put for now.

Have you picked up a copy of "The Ways of the Rifle" yet?  Have that in the book section of Pilk's, too.  I am drooling on my keyboard again.  Has Stephanie PM's to sweet talk you yet?  She has a "thing" for that rifle, I hear.
