The woods were full of nutmunchers today, however none of the devils provided me with a clear shot. They knew I was there and more than willing to tell me about it. At one point I was sitting between four large trees with atleast one in each tree barking at me. It was nice just to be out in the woods.
It was not however a fruitless morning. I stumbled across they babies as I was leaving. Anyone have a good recipe for pufffballs (LYCOPERDON spp. and CALVATIA spp.)?
Follow up: The smaller puffball was already yellowing inside but the larger one was snow white. Boy that sure is tasty sliced just under 1/4 inch, peeled, dipped in egg, rolled in finely crushed cracker, and fried in butter like green tomatotes. It has a wonderful mild mushroom flavor, similar to a portabella mushroom.
