Another wonderful weekend
« on: September 28, 2008, 01:04:08 PM »
Saturday started off with a short morning hunt. I slipped into the woods just before sun up and found a comfortable spot to sit and wait for morning sun. I only had about an hour an a half to hunt before the annual trap shoot so I made the best of it. As I sat there I spotted a Hickory tree on the other side of the ravine and While it was a little out of range for an air rifle I did make a mental note of the squirrel activity for my next trip.

The annual trap shoot was a ball and I had the chance to break out my 12 ga and warm her up a little for the coming deer season. I also took my air rifle with me and did a little plinking on the range. The only target I could find were spend 410 cases. let me tell you 410 cases are quit the target from 25 yrds wher your trying hit the brass end caps, but the Ben Sheridain preformed nicely. We were treated to a exhibition shooter after lunch and it was quite a show. The finally was a tannerite explosion of red, white, and blue chalk line powder.

This morning I returned to the woods and went strat to a spot within range of the hickory tree I saw yesterday. I nesseled up next to a tree about 20 ft away fron the hickory and cover myself with an camo net. As the sun started to come up the squirrels came out in force. I bagged my limit within a half hour but had so much fun watching, I just sat there as the nutters scurried back and forth amount their dead buddies that I hadn't picked up yet. It was as if it didn't seem to bother them at there were five dead squirrel laying in the middle of all those hickory nuts. After an hour an a half I got up and scared off the squirrles for a while and collected my reward. I got so wrapped up in cleaning all that meat that I forgot to take any pics.

Wow only 20ft away.  You must have been invisible.  Great story and good shooting.  The other squirrels probably thought they ate so many nuts that they were napping :)
