How do I "set" a Maccari spring?

I bought some Maccari springs and I didn't think about having him set them for me when I ordered them. How can I set these springs before I use them?

I think using them "sets" them.  If you take a used Maccari spring out of a gun after it has been used for a short while, the spring is shorter than a new spring, or has "set".  The new Maccari springs should be ready to go.  Might want to de-bur any sharp edge on either end of the spring with a small file taking care not to nick any of the adjacent coils.  And of course, appropriate lubrication and tar.

...to put them in the gun with stock guides. Cock it and leave it overnight. Then shoot it once and remove the spring. Deburr, polish and lube. Then use the Maccari guides from an old tune kit. Reinstall the spring and shoot away.
Does that sound right?

I can't see any practical or technical reason for doing that.  I debur the spring ends, put a small amount of clear tar on the Maccari guide, put a small amount of heavy tar on the coils of the spring above the guide, and install the new spring and guide only once.  But hey, I am no pro tuner.

Now that I think about it, I do recall hearing Gene Curtis and Bob Werner mention "setting" a new spring by leaving the newly springed air rifle cocked for a while before testing it -- but in that case, I believe it was only long enough to smoke a cigarette.

When a new spring is installed, just cock your gun and count to 30 and it will be set.

Yep... all you need to do is cock it and let it set for a minute or tw0, or at least I do. Actually it doesn't need to set at all because by the time you fire it a second time it will be set. Setting over night has no useful purpose and if anything, although ever so slightly, stresses the spring.
