Checklist
« on: December 18, 2008, 02:04:12 AM »
Allright,

I've got Gene modding my Whisper VH and am hoping it will be here soon.  My motion sensor has been ordered.  So what's the appropriate cat food to use for coons and other pests?  The wet stinky stuff in the can or the dry stuff?   I dont need a depredation permit if the furbearing critter is within 100 yds of my home but I've got some nosey neighbors and havel some concern regarding sniping pests from my upstairs bedroom window.  My neighborhood is a zero lot postage stamp type subdivision in the country, but there's a ton of wildlife crawling around us on all points.  I'm going to be shooting on top of these critters as I dont want tick anyone off by killing a coon or rat in my neighbors yard.

Practice, practice and practice so you can always get a head-shot.....that`ll usually stop them from crawling into a neigbours yard.  The Whisper is pretty quiet....but if you want to dampen the report more....I would suggest you keep the barrel inside the house instead of sticking it out the window.  Put up some hunting pics when you git sum.....

My upstairs bedroom has 2 windows that overlook 3 empty lots similar to a courtyard since the housing bust.  They planted rye grass on the lots and it's about 100 yards by 50 yards like a football field.  The street lights  installed give a lot of light, but I havent checked thru a scope yet for nocturnal sniping.  I'm going to have to dig a hole and hide the bait and also conceal the motion sensor so the neighbors dont get wise to my plans.  Not sure what to do with the setup, but I'll keep the muzzle inside to muffle the sound.  I wonder if Oswald did that?  LoL

Wet or dry cat food will work even table scrap's. Night critter's will eat about anything to keep the fat on their hide. When checking out a shooting /sniping local be sure and check out what's behind your target area for safety sake, don't want any stray's headed for the no kill zone. Ed

Use dry cat food with seafood in it.  It's cheaper that way because most of your bait will be eaten by cats and skunks and believe me you don't want to shoot a skunk.  I tried hot dogs, canned (wet) cat food, sardines etc. but it was getting expensive because 80% of it was eaten by cats and skunks.  Right now I use a 16lb bag that I got for like $8 at at Walmart.  It's last a very long time (keep it sealed).  It 's a combination of tuna, salmon and other seafood but Ed is right, coons will eat just about anything, even bread, leftover pizza.. save the bones & fat after you have steak, pork chops or chicken, or any dinner leftovers.  They 'll eat it.

If you 're going to use the Whisper I would pick a range no more than 25yds, 20yds preferrably.  Raccoons are large animals and tough.  You miss the brain and they 'll easily walk away before you get another shot.  Place a target or paper where the bait is going to be, and practice enough until you can get really good groups consistently and know you can put that pellet within 1/2" every time.

I have taken probably 100 critters from my home windows.  Groundhogs and racoons are the most challenging because they have excellent hearing unlike the skunks & possums and spook very easily.  You have to be prepared to shoot when they come, and not open the window or move stuff around to get ready if you have a high success rate.  They 'll pick up the slightest sound and take off even if they are 40, 50yds out.  I keep the window open all the time at night in another room when I use the outdoor sensor.  I also keep that door closed which I have oiled well so it doesn't squeak when I open it.  So keep the receiver in a different room because it's kind of loud, and cock the gun there too before you approach the window you shoot from.  It's tough if you only have 1 room to work with.  Cock the gun slowly and quietly.  Keep the receiver under the covers to muffle the sound and turn it off immediately when it goes off.  Then hopefully you can open the window without making any sound at all and your floor doesn't squeak.  Also make sure you have a clear path to the window with nothing on the floor.  I have spooked a couple of critters by stepping on my son's toys or other crap my wife threw in that guest room after I set it all up for the night..  The word is "silence".  If you can accomplish that, you 'll get your racoon.  Good luck.

RE: Raccoon Bait - Vanilla Wafers?

Some years ago, I had a small hobby farm in MO and an experienced old farmer who sharecropped it for me.  Grew alfalfa hay and sold square bales to the local horse owners as a pretty good cash crop.  When we started having trouble with raccoons living in the hay loft, Leonard (the crusty old farmer) would trap them and take them to the local FHA for "relocation".  He swore by baiting his traps with vanilla wafers -- says raccoons find them irresistible.  He was pretty successful at trapping them too.

BTW, raccoons have no salivary glands.  That is why they like water at hand when they are eating -- not to wash with, but quite literally, to wash it down with.  Having a source of water as well as food attracts them.

My upstairs bedroom over the garage has 2 windows overlooking the3 empty lots. There are no trees at all in the empty lots and I'm curious to see if any wildlife will venture into the center of all the houses without any cover to snack on some wafers/cat food. The second guestroom upstairs has a single window overlooking a side street and other housesso that's out. there's about 30 acres of undeveloped landBOOMING with wildlifeoppositefrom the garage sidewith the upstairs windows but there's notan upstairswindow with a view of the idealhunting ground. There's coyotes, Deer, Geese, Crow,... Heck, I even called a turkey up to my front door this past spring! I've seen some monster tracks while scouting the area. I'm not convincedany critterswill venture into the midst of the empty lots with houses all around, but food might have an effect. Apart from sneaking out the garage and prowling around the corner of my house, I cant snipe the 30 acre plot from the comfort of my house.

Paul,  if they 're out there, trust me they 'll come!  Usually after Midnight or 1am when there are no noises around and everyone in the neighborhood is sleeping.  If your bedroom windows face these 3 empty lots you 're good to go.  At first you may have to put some sardines down to get their attention and maybe some wet (can) cat food - the seafood kind.  Once they 've visited a couple of times and have found the spot, they 'll keep coming back.  These animals can smell food from pretty far away.  Between 1 and 5am is when the racoons are most active around me.  They come out on my lawn in the open and feed, why not an empty lot?  They don't care about the houses around.  They usually walk up to your garbage when you 're asleep to see if they can get in there.  If it snows where you are, you can tell by all the little (or big) footprints in the snow who 's been visiting at night.

The problem is going to be the cats and skunks.. there always seem to be more of them around, and if not, they always visit more frequently than any other night critter.  I have 4 different skunks now coming regularly.  It's easy to distinguish them..  and it's getting to be a pain in the neck getting up 2-3X a night to scare them away.  Some of them return 15-20min. later after they pretend to walk away..  I had the same skunk come back 3 times last night every hour on the hour between 12:30 and 3:30.  The 3d time when I saw the same skunk again, I said the hek with it and went back to bed and turned the Ding Dong off :)   He was pretty deaf and I had to litterally walk outside and make a lot of noise to scare him away, but twice was enough.  Some dry cat food was not worth losing sleep over.  He was limping too, probably very old.. but boy was he stubborn.

The vanilla wafers that Tommy suggested may not be a bad idea at all.  Chances are the cats won't go for that unless they are starving, but I don't know about the skunks.. they seem to eat everything too..  If possums show up that's good - take them out but they primarily eat meat & carrion which is why I use cat food and sometimes cheap hot dogs when they go on sale.. they like them both although I have not seen one for almost 2 weeks and he got spooked when it started raining as I had my sights on him and took off.
Can you post a pic or 2 of the empty lots and the surrounding area?
Keep us posted and good luck!

Tim,

It was great meeting you and Gene today.Gene's shop setup is impressive and that lathe is NICE! I am really pleased with my Whisper VH! Gene's tune made all the difference and I broke it in proper taking a big nutter at my aunt's house this afternoon in the rain. Didnt get a pic before the neighbor's cat got ahold of him!

I'll have to snap some shots of the empty lots I'll be sniping and here are a few teaser shots of the freshly Turbo tuned and triggered Whisper VH.

Cheers!

Oh, and that .50 cal was incredible. The sheer force and percussion from the lead spewing out the barrel made my glasses rattle on my face. LoL
