Our Wives and Air Rifle's
« on: December 28, 2008, 03:16:14 AM »
Does anyone else's wives think there crazy for loving air rifle's. Mine looks at me like I am retarded. Also, she looks down on me for killing the squirrels that eat our trash! Gives me a hard time about buying the rifle's, the ammo, the scopes, ETC. Does anyone have any advice on how to get them to accept the fact that it is something that men like to do? Any advice to get them to understand that killing tree rats is ok? Help me out guys

ugh. I hear ya... My fiance thinks I'm crazy.. I've bought 4 air rifles in 3 months. I tried to reason with her by giving her the excuse "well, I could be out drinking with the boys and picking up girls" . DO NOT USE THIS EXCUSE - doesn't work, and usually leads to a bigger fight which you can't win. I'm a golf professional in Nebraska, and I need something to do in the winter, so naturally I took up airgunning. Marksmanship keeps my mind sharp and helps with my focus, and the tinkering gives me something to do with my time. This reasoning tends to satisfy her for the most part. I still can't understand how they can spend their time obsessing about shoes and handbags and not understand our passion for air guns. Anyways, there's my 2 cents...

Sounds normal.
With rare exceptions* it's pre-programmed into their mitochondrial DNA.

Rob,,,,I got into this hobby exactly one year ago,it was a Christmas gift from my girlfriend that started me up,,,, :) I got so addicted that I set a goal for myself in january 08 to own 20 airrifles by my birthday(5/16),,,I bought about 40 before April,,,,,,, :o My girlfriend looks at me me & laughs  :D  :D   she already knew I was nuts when we met so that part of her thoughts were easy to deal with..... :) What I did to keep her interested in my hobby/interests,,I bought her a Hamereli Storm Elite .177 for Valentines Day,,, :p  She picks it up every so often  & plinks away :)  :)  is she addicted,,,no, but it gives her a better understanding of why I am obsessed with airguns.. :D  Tanya(girlfriend)sometimes buys airgun stuff for me,,, I am waiting for my Christmas gift to come,,it's out of stock untill 2/09...she still hooked me up for Christmas with a few things that will have a few of our members here smiling when I go on my next hunting outing with Jeff,,,,watch for the pics,,, :)  Now for a bit of advice,,,,,,buy her an airgun & take her shooting with ya!!!!! :)  It worked for me & others have done the same with a good turnout!!!!!! :)

       GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

And THAT excuse worked better than "...I could out drinking with the boys and picking up loose women..." ?

Come on.... I prefer the direct approach:

"My guns last longer than your trips to Red Roof SPA....."

That always stops the conversation (one way or the other.)  :o

Hey Robert,

Fortunately for me, Inoticed this phenomenon before I tied the knot ! And took perspective mates shooting with me, and instructed them in shooting. Those that said that they would never accept firearms in"my" home, were gone ! A few enjoyed shooting, but but showed extreme displeasure, when I went hunting, even when offered to attend. They also went by the way :( Please understand, shooting and hunting have always been my main form of relaxation and enjoyment, and I would have rather remained single, than to give up my guns ! "FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS"! Luckily for me, I found a Wonderful women, whose father and Grandfather both were hunters and shooters, and we have had 33 years of wedded bliss !

I knew marriage had many inherent difficulties, and I have been preparedto deal with them, as they arose, but continued arguing over my sport and hobby, would have made marriage unbearable !

Before we were married, I bought her a pistol, a 22 cal Victor, and a tournament recurve bow and arrows. We practiced together, and competed prior to the birth of our daughter. When she was old enough, I taught her safe and proper handling of firearms and how to shoot. Today she is very proficient with firearms, and enjoys shooting.

So my point is; Life is SHORT ! Make the best of it ! Do Your Homework !

I bet Dano would have some good stuff to add to this thread..:) And what would a woman say to her husband or boyfriend if she were addicted to air rifles. Peak Chick comes to mind..:) I am sure she has a boy friend and he probably thinks she is nuts also..:) But remember a woman has a softer tough and the Peak does have a nice trigger finger. So when he points out her addiction she can always point back with her trigger finger at all his toys..:)

My wife want to know why I need more Air gun's as I can only shoot one at a time. So I ask how come she need so many purse's she could only carry one at a time. By the way this didn't get me any were:-) LoL then I found out that all my gun's look a like to Her so I get a new one put it with the other's and she not any wiser. beat asking and getting in the guns vs purse fight. :-)

Yes, what she don't know wont hurt her, tell her the long boxes that show up in the mail are just pieces of lumber you plan on using when you remodel the bathroom next year.....small boxes are "nails".  When next year comes go ahead and remodel the bathroom, next year you'll have to redo the guest bathroom or the kitchen though:)

Honestly I've only been at this for about 3 years or so.  My wife has seen various hobbies come and go, seen various pieces and parts show up in the mail.  She really doesn't care all that much. although she isn't real interested in it either.  I built her a custom Crosman 2260 a couple years ago for Christmas, she put about 10 rounds through it and it has been in her closet ever since.  Same thing with my two oldest sons, both have a Red Ryder and a Daisy 880 each, but neither have put more than maybe 200 rounds through all of them total.  They let me have "my" hobby and I don't say anything when a new video game or a new purse comes home with them, it's all very civil...haha!!!  At one point I had about 17 guns here not including the kids or wifes guns, I think she got a little nervous there for awhile, but now I'm down to 5....but she gots no idea how much money I have into a couple of them :o  :o  :o

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but my wife's purses and pocketbooks cost a bunch more than most all of my bb guns. She tells me that they wear very well, and last for a long, long time ! I doubt she has ever kept a purse for 10 years, now there's lasting !!!!

And shall we mention shoes ??????

I keep clear of this topic at home, as she never complains about my hobbies, she only comes out to ask me how I'm shootin ! Then takes a few shots to keep her hand in, so to speak !
