I doubt that there is any state in the union where taking deer with an air rifle is legal. I'm not going to wander off on a rant here but that sort of hunting belongs with the ignorant, irresponsible, and inhumane crowd. There is a reason that it is illegal to hunt large game with an air rifle. It is wrong to take the chance of crippling and then loosing the game animal. One may be capable of making the shot with a pea shooter, that does not excuse one from responsibly using the proper tools for the game animal which will suffer death at the hands of the hunter. In any state of which I am aware, hunting deer with an air rifle is considered poaching. Your friend should be ashamed. I'll leave it at that.
Ever heard of...

I've been corrected on this post. There are states which permit air rifle hunting although SC does not appear to be one of them.
He is in South Carolina so Missouri laws are irrelevant; however hunting deer, or hogs for that matter (with an air rifle) is not legal in South Carolina. Never the less ...
There is ONE (1) reference to pellet rifles in the Missouri Hunting Regulations. You are authorized to hunt bull frogs with your pellet rifle.
Here is your link:
http://www.sos.mo.gov/adrules/csr/current/3csr/3c10-7.pdfThe .50 Dragon Slayer would not be legal in Missouri to hunt deer, sorry. Do you want to know why? That rifle generates about 200 FPE. A .22 Magnum generates about 325 FPE, roughly 63 percent more energy, and guess what? It is not legal to hunt deer with a .22 Magnum in any state that I know either.
Air rifles are wonderful things, there is no doubt in my mind that a skilled shooter could humanely take deer with an air rifle. Never the less, it is ILLEGAL, just as MuzzleBrakes are ILLEGAL. So, being ILLEGAL, we should not encourage it or brag about doing it as that makes our sport look bad. It is not only ILLEGAL, it is not prudent. It is irresponsible to take an air rifle out to hunt deer. I understand that large game has been taken with some of the super-duper pea shooters, but that does not mean one should take his .22 PCP out hunting deer. A missed shot, even by half an inch could leave you with a crippled deer or blind deer and no blood trail, all because you could do something which should not be done.
If we brag about or encourage the taking of such large game with such light weapons, kids will be out there chest shooting deer, dogs, and whatever else they feel like shooting. The result will be a lot of crippled critters dying slow agonizing deaths.
Back around 1986 I took my sons hunting on the Sabine River in East Texas. During the hunt I found a dead buck with a very nice eight point spread. He had been shot through the lungs with something very like an air rifle. It probably took him a day or two to drown in his own blood. It was upsetting to see that the stupidity and irresponsibility of some twit with an air rifle could torture such a beautiful beast to a slow and agonizing death, given that the same shot with even a .22 hollow point would probably have killed the animal in a couple of minutes.
Mind you I am a hunter myself, I have been even before I took my first deer with a "Red Wing Hunter" back in 1967. I have been a trapper as well. I was a soldier for eleven years. I have hunted in forests, jungles, and prairie. I have hunted game as diverse as wild boar, deer, mountain goat, javalina, porcupine, armadillo, ground hog, squirrel, rabbit, doves, quail, turkey, coyote, nutria, skunk, and raccoon. I have humanely taken deer with a recurve bow, shotgun, and rifle. I have hunted small game with air rifle, sling shot, bow, shotgun, and rim fire rifle. I have also had my share of crippled and lost game but I try real hard not to take excessive risks with the lives of my prey.
If we want to continue to be allowed to hunt and possess firearms and air arms, we need to make darn sure we are obeying the laws and being responsible. Just because one can do something, is not a license to actually do it.
His friend is being irresponsible.
Is that touched up enough for you?
