different spring tar idea
« on: January 26, 2009, 02:22:59 PM »
Has anyone ever tried a light coating of rubberized  auto undercoating on the spring? I was thinking of putting a wooden dowel inside the spring to keep it off the tophat and rear spring guide area and lightly spraying the OD of spring. Once dry it should never fling off and would be a great vibration damper. Maybe this has been tried and didn't work but I haven't seen it mentioned.

I think that this wouldn't last long on the spring due to the spring's movement and possible rubbing against other internals. It would come off then end up dispersing chunks of it inside the action and causing major problems. Just my pellet's worth. :) Ed

I would think it would just flake off after shooting it a while. It would be a mess to say the least. Remember the spring expands and contracts as well as compress.

it was just a thought. I have seen it sprayed inside wheel wells of cars and trucks and it seemed to take a lot of abuse.Of course I also used to make my own bolt buffers for ruger 10-22s until one broke while shooting in the low 20 degree weather. It was a bit to brittle. Gun started having misfires due to tiny shards of plactic getting into the trigger works.

Hello Bill,

Others wanted and have tried different methods to quiet down the springer air rifle, but even ifyou use to much heavy tar, you will loose velocity in your springer.

Others have tried Plasti Dip and Plastic Coat to quiet down their springs, but with the loss in velocity, all that I have heard of, went back to a light coating of heavy tar. even using too much heavy tar will slow down your springer !

Good luck !
