Field Target
« on: February 02, 2009, 06:01:48 AM »
I posted this awhile back. It's the Louisiana State Field Target Championship. It's a slide show and has some really good pics of the different positions people use in comps. And some mighty spiffy airguns!

It's long. Enjoy!

The link didn't work...for me anyway.

I'll work on it. Sorry.

Here is some field target position pics. The rules state that you can have a 6" pad to sit on. Nothing supporting the gun except for your own body.

I found that for me I sit at an angle with my left knee leading. I use my left arm across this knee and then place the gun on top of that. I balance it so I do not need much if any support from my shooting hand. I then move/wiggle my feet until the gun is lined up with the target, focus, aim and shoot. I tried the knee pads and found that it was just too wiggly for me so I went back to shooting across arm, over the knee. I also have a back brace with straps that go across your knees so when you sit down you can actually lean back into the brace. It's kind of a pain to wear but it does help me keep steady. I also have an old Army shooting jacket that seems to fit tighter these days????? It also helps you to lock your arms.

When I practice I use a bench and try to rest the gun so it is as near to my field target position and support as I can. So far I've not had a problem switching from bench to sitting field target position. But as time goes by I find that I have more trouble doing most anything????

Basically like this

Some shooters have adjustable stocks with a knee support so they are more upright.

Here is the Ladies World Champ

A typical lane holding 2 targets. We normally shoot the closest first. You can't see them here with the camera shot, but they are there.

This techinque is used when the targets are placed up in a tree

There are also mandatory off-hand shots

The shooters are paired up in two's or three's depending on the number of entrants and are assigned a lane to start from. A timer is used with a predermined time limit before the match how much time for each shot. Your paired partner keeps your score as you do his/hers.

Your welcome! Back in the day I would spend that much to play, but nowdays I spend it on BBQ pits. The Lady Pictured is part of a whole family of shooters and they enjoy the sport so much that they all compete together. It would be hard to find a nicer group! It is fun being there watching them compete and heckle each other while doing so. Husband beats Wife, Wife beats Husband, oh no the kids won. Great people for sure.

Great pictures Ron.  I just asked Dave Kirby for some pictures like that so I could start doing some shooting from the seated position.  I'm really interested in trying field target out, but the closest place I can find where they shoot it is down in Austin.  I've been thinking maybe we need a Fort Worth club, but since I haven't even tried it out I can't really try to organize it.  I've been sitting here in my livingroom trying out the different seated positions, dreaming of the day when I can actually try them out:)

Just a question from a newbie.....in the off-hand shooting position....do the elbow of the forward arm touch your hip/ribcage area....like those olympic shooters?

Hey Stanley.  The answer is yes.  I just did a post on the offhand position and how to practice for it in the Springer section and it is now in the library.  http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/airguns/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=13946&mid=112204#M112204
That leading upper arm/elbow is in a friction hold against your ribs.  The idea is to give the rifle bone/skeletal support rather than relying on the deltoid.

Thanks Charlotte....I tried that indoors a few months back.....and my body`s in all sorts of contortions....but the accuracy did improve.  I had a hard time getting the scope to eye level....  I`ll check out your "offhand shooting position" link.
