Heads up!
« on: February 09, 2009, 04:12:52 PM »
Thank you all for the great turnout and great fun.  Same match this coming weekend.  Better get those targets and spend some time doing your drills.
Hey Mick, you want to give some practice tips?   We would all LOVE to get some advice from you.

OK Charlotte ... I'm assuming that this is for the Offhand/Standing position events ... although in many ways it applies to all shooting positions  !

TIP #1:   STAND STILL !   Sounds laughable ... Right ?

But ... this not the "Standing Still" that results when an FBI man nuzzles the muzzle of a .45 between your shoulder blades and breathes "Freeze !"   Or one of those intimate moments when that SOB Drill Sergeant coos "Stand at attention, you 'orrible little man" over your right shoulder.  Each of those gentle thoughts generally results in a total tensioning of all the muscles in ones' body ... sends the pulse racing ... nerves all atingle.

No !   One "stands still" by relaxing every muscle, tendon and fibre of the body and allows all the weight to settle to where every joint is in virtual bone on bone contact .... but NOT flopping around like a bowl of demented Jello.   Of course it helps if one is facing in the right direction, head upright, to see the target without the slightest flicker of an eye ... with arms and hands placed such that, if a rifle were placed in those hands by some convenient bystander, ones' strong eye would be perfectly aligned with the sights and the centre of the bullseye !   Think about that a little ... too idealistic perhaps ?

It is a fact that at the exact moment of trigger/sear release, the natuiral tendency of the majority of the humanoid species is to totally relax.   This means that if one is "muscling the rifle" to obtain perfect sight/target alignment, then the rifle will revert to the position/direction from whence it was being "shoved" by that muscle pressure ... the result ... a FLYER !

This then means that "Position" is virtually everything ... it is the one thing that physically controls how well you will shoot ... the mental aspects ... how one approaches the shot ...  are what complete the picture.   More later!

Thanks Charlotte and Mick for much appreciated "practice drills"....it`ll surely help me and alot of other shooters.  And Charlotte my air rifle is more highe rand the scope is more level to my eye since I pulled that forward hand very close to the triggerguard....practically under it!!!!!.....and the elbow is almost touching my ribs.

Charlotte,
Hate to be a pain, but we re-post the contest parameters/details again?

The target is the Gamo target shot at 10 meters/33 feet.  Five shots per target on 4 targets for a total of 20 shots for score.  A possible 200 points.  In order for you to get an X the hole must be completely inside the 10 ring and not touching the line.
All shots MUST be from the standing offhand position.  So, laying on your stomach on a piece of foam and shooting is not legal.  I say that because I did a match on another web site and someone with no competetive experience was posting scores in the mid 90's for a 10 shot offhand string and we found out that he had in fact shot all 3 positions Standing, Seated, and Prone from the prone position.  We had posted pictures and drawings and tutorials for each position and he claimed he was confused.  If your body isn't vertical it isn't standing.
If you have health issues and need to shoot offhand from a chair, have at it but don't prop your elbows on any surface.  Come to think of it, a 5 gallon bucket match would be fun, wouldn't it?  Same target, same everything, but you have to be sitting on a 5 gallon bucket.  Maybe we can do that soon.

Looking forward to this weekend shoot already! Went out and got some new Gamo targets and a back belt today so be warned, I am trussed up and ready!

'5 gallon bucket match' So what's that in metric, about 23 liters I guess! I can get hold of 25 liter buckets but that gives me a half gallon advantage! Any objections? LOL!

What's a few liters or quarts amongst friends.  Sounds close enough to me.  Actually, I do like the bucket idea.

That's what I sit on when sighting in my air rifles.

I like the "sit-on-bucket" shooting idea.....most definitely will improve most shooters' scores.

Hi again, Ms Charlotte,

As I have mentioned before ... the spinal surgery I underwent last July was not successful in restoring feeling in my feet ... indeed, although I have "full use" of the lower limbs ... I now have NO feeling in either foot, or in the left leg.   Thiis has proven a major disadvantage in maintaining any sense of balance while shooting offhand, especially when coupled with my ear - missing since WW2 - and the loss of dexterity in my hands.

So ...  following up on the few experiments I made last week ... I tried turning the clock back some 60-70 years to the days when as a boy I helped "beat" the pheasants and partridges from our coverts towards the waiting gentry at the main shooting line.  It weas common in those days for these gentlemen ... even the King, George V, was a guest at these annuals events ... to perch their exalted bums upon the leather seat of their opened shooting sticks ... some even shot while thus perched.

These devices, made by some of the exclusive London firms, today typically sell in the USA for some $200~350 ... Ouch !   Less expensive copies made in Pakistan and elsewhere can be had for around 15~25% of that sum ... still expensive.   So with a little head scratching ... a visit to Lowes ... and the outlay of $10 and a little time in my shop ... Behold !  (See pics below ... )

I fired one experimental shot series a few minutes ago on a standard 10M target, while using this crude "Bum-Prop" ... it's far from great, but at least 9 shots out of 10 are in the black ... it will take a bit of practice to get a true feel for the right technique - lol !   Other "wobbly shooters" may find this encouraging ?

Whoops !!   I omitted to enter the links to the pics of the finished shooting seat-stick ... a far cry from the beautifully finished chrome and leather originals , but ... !

Found they were too big to put on the Forum directly ... Soirry !   The rifle by the way, was my BSA Ultra, .177 ... pellets were Vogel Match Diablo ... scope was a BSA 2-7x32 at 7X !
