Scope question for my RWS 48
« on: December 28, 2006, 12:54:06 PM »
Hi, I am new to the forum and air gunning in general, and I have a question about my RWS model 48 in .22 caliber. I bought a Gamo scope stop and it is holding right now, but it looks like it won't last long. Will a Beeman stop work better on my rifle? Any ideas? The rifle is accurate and fun to shoot, but I would like to take care of the scope question so I can shoot without worrying about the scope shooting off, lol. I forgot to mention I bought a RWS model 300 scope and an ez-adjust one-piece base. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Threeguns has a 48 and he should chime in and help you out any  time now so hang on a bit,  he checks the forum quite often.
He was over to my place earler this week to fit a "Q" to his 48 but I can't remember what scope he has mounted on it.

Welcome aboard, David!  I have a 350, so maybe my info will help.  I don't think the Gamo stop is going to last.  So far, I've had two different setups on my 350.  I had a Simmons 44 Mag with a Beeman 5039 adjustable mount.  The 5039 has a recoil pin that I was able to fit into one of the holes on the scope rail.  Contrary to lots of opinions, this held fine for somewhere around 1000 shots.  Then I noticed the windage lock screws were loosening up, so decided to switch stuff around.  The 350 now has a Leapers 3-12x44 full size scope in Accushot 1 pc. fixed mount.  I mounted the mount backwards and hung the recoil stop pin over the front of the rail.  I also shimmed up the scope to compensate for barrel droop.  So far, so good.  Nothing's moved in a couple hundred shots.  Hope this is some help, good luck.

Dave

Dave, I like the sound of that Accushot set up.  I will also look into the 5039 that you mentioned.  Thanks for the welcome.  LOL, I may have to keep asking questions when I go to put a new stop on.  Thanks again, David

Pyramyd Air has good prices and good selection.  Haven't bothered to look anywhere else.

I also used an Accushot one piece mount on my RWS 350 to mount my Leapers scope and it hasn't moved at all.  I didn't mount it the same way Dave mounted his (stop pin in front of the rail), I did mine with the stop pin tightly scewed down into one of the the stop pin holes and it's held great, but on the RWS's I know the stop pin hanging in front is a common way to mount it.

Thanks for responding Longislandhunter.  Which model of the Accushot do you use?  I noticed they have a few models of the one-piece mount.  Is Accushot better than a Beeman mount?  Thanks.

Ha DW33 sorry I took so long to get to you but I spilled something in my lap-top but any -ho I do own a rws 48 in a 22 and it is very ,very stright  shooting gun but you wnat to know about the scope and rings= both are made by Beeman the rings came with the scope the scope is a 3-9-32aomm for some reason the model has been markered-out with a black marker, the box just saysBeeman Air Rifle Scope3-9-32aomm if i come up with a model #  I will leave you a message ..PSS Make sure you use BLUE loc-tite on all of your mounting screws and scope mounting screws and sent it to Rich for a special muzzle break that he hand makes himself ,to wake a long story short wy dad andI was out tree-rat hunting a day or so ago and we spotted a squirrel in the top of a huge oak and my dad didn't even know I shot the thing until it bounced off the ground.

Thanks threeguns for the info.  Who is Rich?  How much does the muzzle-brake lower the recoil?  I came to this site because I read some good stuff about Charlie Tuna; will his tune-up lower the kick on the rifle so the scope is not as affected as it is now?  Thanks again, dw.

Yes, this rifle shoots very well.  I really like shooting it, which should keep me in practice for deer season.  Now, if some rabbits would cooperate when I go out with my model 48, that would be great, lol.

Hi DW33,

To answer your question I used the Accushot High mount 1 piece scope mount for 1 inch scope tubes. They also sell 1 piece mounts that are made to fit the 30mm scope tubes so if you decide to purchase one make sure you get the correct one for your scope.

The othe thing to consider is the question of whether your barrel has any droop factor.  RWS are noted for having barrel droop designed into the rifle.  Some rifles are more pronounced than others. My 350 had droop and in my case I chose to shim the rear of the scope mount to correct the problem. I am not advising you to shim any scope you may have,,,,, that is a personal decision that one must make after doing all the research and deciding for ones self.  Keep in mind it is possible to damage a scope during shimming if you're not careful.  In my case I chose to take the chance.

If the scope mount you have on the gun now is working then why change it?  If all you need is a good scope stop then check out Rich's website.  I believe he sells a modified GAMO scope mount that he says hold well.  Check out his website,,,, he really has a lot of good stuff and if you have any questions all you have to do is email him and I'm sure he'll steer you in the right direction.

Thanks for pointing me to Rich's website - I think if that stop will do the trick, I should be all right.  Thanks for bringing up a good point, (Why change it?).  I don't think I need to shim the scope; I am going to try the elevation knob on the mount.  I have never lubed or done anything to my rifle.  Do I need to?  Thanks to everyone for all the info, appreciate it, best, dw
