Winter Salmon
« on: February 23, 2009, 11:00:14 AM »
I have been out winter chinook fishing, and my poor air rifles are getting dusty. But the salmon rods a wet. HEHE Took my boys out Saturday and the youngest nailed a 12 pounder. My oldest had to throw back an 8 pound native(only hatchery can be kept.) I lost two, but we wont talk about that. I guess my kids should real them all in. It's nice to have action right away with the kids on board. They get bored quickly. I was able to pick up my own 12 pound fish on Sunday, and got another 8 pound fish this mourning.   Took a pic of the new puppy that's doing well, and an eagle that stole the salmon carcass from the seagulls.

Wow, Dan. Thanks for the shots. That looks like spectacular fun, and I'm sure your sons will always remember.
How can you tell the hatchery fish? Are they tagged?
What's the deal with that Gonzaga shirt...are you a basketball fan? I'm a Memphis Tiger Blue loyalist, from the 70's era.

regards,

J

Hatchery fish have their adipose fin clipped off at the hatchery before release. It is a small fin that sits between the tail and the dorsal fin.

You caught me. I am a big Zag fan. Have been a hoop nut my whole life. UW is also playing some great b-ball right now. Just fun to watch the tough, hard nosed college game. But Jerry, we wont talk about the can your Tigers opened up on us :emoticon: . That Memphis team plays some great ball.

Thanks for the kind words. I love getting out with my boys, still remember the days my father took me out. Wondering if the weather would be good enough in the mourning. The smell of the outboards. Heading out of the canal with the sun coming up over our backs.

I have seen schools of salmon up shallow, but the are always moving. On mythbuster they shot .222's into water and the bullets would disintegrate after a foot or two. Don't think a pellet would have much of a chance. I would still have to hit spine or brain(no chance). Ed(shadow) might be able to make that shot, but not me. HEHE :emoticon:
