Well Guys,

You All have it wrong ! SURVIVAL IS KNOWLEDGE ! There are four basic areas of survival; Arctic, Desert, Jungle and Urban. If you know the basics of how to find water, food and shelter, your good to go !

If you want to make it easy, a S.F. Survival Kit, a Medic Surgical Kit, A Good Knife and the biggest canteen that you would want to carry, 2 quart would be nice. Oh, and a GOOD Compass if you know how to use one.

With a Good Knife, you can have all the shooters that you want ... and make all the bows and arrows and spears that you need. And if you want to make it real easy, take a camp axe and a machete.

And if you want survive, learn to eat anything, anything at all.

Just my opinion :-)

Curioguy - 2/26/2009 5:36 PM I know y’all are discussing rifles here but why not consider a bow and arrows of course. This is something I have actually been thinking about adding to my survival cache. This weapon has been used in past centuries in fighting wars to taking game. It can even be adapted for fishing. It requires very little maintenance and with a little know how, you can make your own arrows. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, it is so quiet!
You WIN Gary!! Way to go Buddy!! Nice,,,,,, very nice!!8) Tim. (Course,,,,,Uncle Bill has a point,,,Ya NEED a good knife!!:D )

In the event that the balloon goes up, it won't be like Jericho.  Finally caught an episode this week.  Guys walking around with Starbucks looking coffee cups.  Oh yeah.  Women's hair still nearly permed.  Sure.  My wife told me to shut up - it's a story.

Lewis and Clark took the air gun mostly to impress the Indians.  Their survival rifle was the 1803 Harpers Ferry rifle in .54.  Reportedly, one of the party was surprised by a grizzly which he dispatched by sticking the barrel in it's mouth.  Try that with your PCP.

Keeping a flinter going without a store handy is easier said than done.  Ditto making your own powder.  Got to have saltpeter for that.  Not many outhouses around these days if you know what I mean.  Then you have to learn how to make it right.  If you don't blow yourself up in the process.  Locks wear out, springs break just like any other gun.

The bow and arrow is a good idea.  Self bows, while low in draw weight, can still be made and take game if you can stalk and find it.  Probably better to learn to forage and trap.

Best calibers for survival guns?   .357  or 9mm in a handgun for scrounging popular ammo.  Hard to say anymore in a rifle.  Used to be 30-30 or 30-06 since most stores stocked that.  Likely .223 nowadays.

Me, I'll take the hooker.  By the time I tell her gee, I don't really have any money, it will be too late, anyway.   :D

Interesting book I read a few years back -- "War Day"
Don't remember who wrote it.  But the premise was that a limited nuclear exchange occurs.  An air burst wit EMP wipes out most of the communications and the first global nuclear war is over for both sides almost before it starts with a couple of hits here and there.  I think Houston and NORAD get hit.  Anyway, far from total global devistation, except . .  Every car with electronic ignition is useless, all communications are down.  Banking records and all forms of "electronic" wealth are destroyed.  There are large contaminated zones and people being "triaged" because of the amount of radiation dose they got, as to whether or not they would receive medical care.  Goes on from there.  Dreary story.  Better to have lived in Houston.

Couldn't help but put in my 2 cents.....

Any .22 caliber rimfire and all the ammo I could carry.  CB caps are as quiet as many air guns and good for small game. Plus a .22 short or long can take most any game animal in North America in a survival situation.

Well, things ain't as bad as they used to be.  Back when I was on the old boomer (fleet ballistic missle sub), they probably had multiple coverage on most major targets - say three or four nukes.  (Nothing succeeds like success dogma.)  Now, we only have to worry about singletaries and the odd rogue black market ex-Soviet field nuke.

I once whiled away an hour or so reading a scenario of a hit on Washington, DC.  It interested me as that is where I was from (then Arlington, right across the river).  Talked about how Charlottesville, Virginia should prepare for any casualties and what they might expect in the way of radiation/burn injuries.  Not encouraging, to say the least.  Or read John Hersey's "Hiroshima" for an accurate post-nuclear description.

Anyway, there's more pleasant  things to ponder.  Worry about it, if and when, the time comes.

Ruger Mini-30 and pump 12 ga. for starters, and the .357 for close-up. Once the scrounging starts I would go with whatever the nearest armed force is using. We are well supplied with ammo at this time.

Pellet guns would have the advantage of stealth for survival hunting. Anything with a "bang" is going to say "fresh meat", of one kind or another, to the rest of the world. Lots of fishing gear on hand. Liquor, coffee, and tobacco would be chief quality of life concerns.

I would not want to see a nuclear attack or invasion of any kind, but given the option, I would always try to survive. It would be interesting, and it is the way my instinct runs. I would want to keep my girl and the dogs and see what could be done to pick up the pieces.

There is a very good book I read recently - “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy. I really recommend it. The book is about father and son walking alone through burned America.
