Ballistic coefficient!!
« on: February 26, 2009, 11:10:19 AM »
I hear all this talk about the BC, I have chairgun too which uses the BC to calculate trajectories of different pellets! Now I understand what it's getting at, eg a pellet with a lower BC will be more aerodynamic thus travel through the air better but, how do I find out what the BC of a particular pellet is? eg what is the BC of a Gamo match .22 or a Gamo pro magnum? Where do I find out these numbers? I don't have a crony (yet!) so I can't use its speed and drop to cross ref back to chairgun. Any ideas? It's so I can do a bit of long range shooting to see if the numbers come out! It  may also give me an idea as to the speed of the gun!

If you are using Chairgun, whenever you select the pellet that you want to find the trajectory on, it shows the BC on the right side of the screen.
There is a column for Pellet Mass (weight in grains) and another column for Pellet BC

Negative on the lower BC being advantageous.
The higher the ballistic coefficient, the better :-)

BC is directly proportional to the mass, and inversely proportionalto the caliber (squared). There's also a shape factor thrown in for bullet shape -- sleek bullets vs stubby bullets.

If you don't have a Chairgun BC already listedin the table, pick a similar SHAPE (domed, wadcutter, pointed, etc) and simply adjust the BCfor the massdifferenceof the pellet you want. (BTW: I find that the BCs listed in Chairgun can vary wildly from what logic would dictate, and field tests actually show downrange. Don't get too wed to their exactness.)

It's really a curiosity factor for me! Shooting is a new endever and I want to learn the different aspects of it! So, I can work out a rough speed of my gun using pellet drop over a certain distance! For example if I set a datum of 10M equal zero bullet drop and then say I have 10" drop at 50 meters I can work backwards using the BC in Chairgun, or would I need to set the barrel horizontal, and shoot say 5 shots at 10m then move my target backwards (but at the same height) and find out the drop so that the pellet exits the gun with a flat projectory........I thing I'm going to get a crony soon, much easier than all this! Sorry guys, sometimes I think too much.   :0

It's been a life long trait of mine! Started off when I dismantled my grandfathers gold pocket watch to see how it worked! He was not in the least bit pleased! After that, I progressed to cars! Same results! Bits all over the place. Luckily for me, I started to understand how to put them back together again! Then it was designing and building stuff from scratch which is what I enjoy best! Unfortunatly, some of my inventions were deemed too dangerous for any company to put into public use so I got a bit disheartened! Now I find it good just to think about how things work and only dabble abit in the building of things!
Anyway, I hope you get some good weather for your end of season hunting! Catch a bunny or 2 for me eh! :p
