First in a decade...
« on: March 05, 2009, 02:48:48 PM »
Powder burner, that is :-).  And more than 3 decades since I owned a center fire rifle.  Made the mistake of handling a new Remington 700 SPS Tactical .308 yesterday, quick chat with the wife and brought it home.  About 2" shorter than my Cyclone, and a similar look, black synthetic stock, parkerized finish, 20" bull barrel.  Muzzle heavy, of course, but it handles and points really nice, can't wait to shoot it.  It got the Burris Timberline from the Cyclone for now, makes for a nice compact package.  So does anyone have any pointers on the .308?  Last center fire rifle I owned was a .444 Marlin, something tells me this is going to be a somewhat different experience :-).  Hopefully I'll have a chance to shoot it this weekend, may post a pic or two then.  Later.

Dave

Well --

Sometime around Thanksgiving, I ordered bulk quantities of .308 ammo from Georgia Arms.  Got a shipment notice yesterday.  If you want to shoot it more than occasionally, you should order up some bulk ammo now.  See:

I scoped and sighted in my M1A 7.62 mm a couple of weekends ago.  Added a sling.  Need to order a bippd.  If you have been shooting only air rifles for a while and shoot the .308, make sure you have your ear protectors on and be prepared for a bit louder report and a more substantial recoil.  And don't get your eye too close to the back rim of that scope.

The Remington 700 series rifles are a known standard among centerfire rifles. I have have several 700 series Remingtons, including a 700 BDL Varminter in .308 that I have had for years. My .308 700 wears a big 6-24 varmint, target scope. The rifle has a trigger that defines the "breaking glass" let off addage. My .308 700 is a geniune 1/2 minute of angle shooter if I do my part. I have shot honest 1" five shot groups with it at 200 yards from the bench. I have a handload worked up for it with hand crafted cases, trimed, neck turned, chamffered, fire formed. My load uses Hornady 168 gr BTHP match bullets, over (if I remember correctly) 52 gr of Hodgdon BL C2.
I don't know if you are set up for hand loading. If not try a wide range of factory loads, I would suggest looking at factory "match" loads that use bullets in the 160 - 190 gr range.
Congrats, you got a great rifle!
