Honest To God True Story
« on: March 20, 2009, 12:49:18 AM »
While I previously posted something of a more serious nature, let me change the tune here to post something which happened to me during my first few weeks of being a police officer...I give you my word this is a true story.

During my first few weeks on the job, I was assigned to work with a training officer who had come to us from an inner-city police department.  "Jim," not his real name, was one of those types of guys who was nothing less than a "woman magnet."  I swear this guy could stand in the middle of a desert and within minutes could find himself surrounded by 25 beautfiul women.  I don't know what it is he has, but women love him.

We were on patrol one mid-morning when we received a call to respond to an apparent suicide.  A lady had returned home for lunch and found her husband had started his car in the garage and had apparently gassed himself.  Turns out he was terminally ill and had done it to ease his own suffering.

Upon arrival, Jim and I were met by the wife...a very, very attractive lady.  Since I was new, Jim directed me to wait in the garage with the husband's body, secure it as a potential crime scene and wait for the medical examiner to arrive to whom we would release the body.
Well, I ended up in the garage for about 3 hours while the medical examiner finally decided to show up.  Everything looked fine, no sign of foul play..other then the fact this guy decided to end his own life.

After the ME arrived and took the body, I walked across the sidewalk toward the house as Jim was walking out the front door with a grin on his face.  As he was coming outside, I asked him what it was he was grinning about.  He told me he'd tell me once we got in the car.  As we were leaving I again asked him..."what's so funny?"  He said to me, "you know that lady back there?"  I said, "yeah?"  He said, "I've got a date with her!"   I kid you not, I sat there dumbfounded...I'm thinking to myself...Man, this has got to be illegal or something.  I'm thinking...he's kidding, but no...he was stone serious.

To make a long story a little shorter, my training officer..Jim, and the poor dead guy's wife ended up getting married and to this day still live in the same home.

Some of the stuff I've seen and done, I swear Hollywood couldn't make it up....

Anyway..such is the life of polce work.

Good thing the "Internal Affairs"  division of your department didn't get wind of your training officers "date", not to mention the homicide division !!  Rather unprofessional behavior for an officer in my opinion, especially considering the circumstances of the event.  Actions such as his (and hers) could have very easily raised the hairs on the back of the neck of a good I/A or homicide detective and possibly been the catalyst for at least an initial investigation.   I'm not throwing darts at your former training officer,,, I spent 23 years on the job and just retired and like you have seen many strange things happen,,,, I'm just saying I think his actions were a bit reckless and definitely unprofessional.   Had that happened in the dept. I worked for someone would've definitely been looking into that relationship......

I agree with you in reference to our head hunters...They go out of their way to make our life miserable.  This was a strange story...certainly not THE strangest one, but I thought people would get a little insight into "cop" humor.  By the way, I hope no one found this story offensive...I sorta wondered about that after I posted it.

It's the bad apples like that cop that makes things bad for the good cop!!!! I would assume he put you in the middle of his scam & because most cops don't tell on cops you become just as wrong as he was!!!!!!! I am a victim of cops not telling on other cops,,,something you really need to look at!!!!

I've usually found that "cop humor" is best kept within the ranks for the simple reason that the majority, if not all, "civilians" are not going to perceive the humor in the same way a cop or ex-cop will and this humor will usually backfire on you if you direct it at civilians.   The world of the working police officer is as you know  a very strange place to say the least.  We are surrounded and constantly bombarded by situations and influences that tend to mold  police humor into something that can really only be "appreciated" by police officers.  They teach you in the police academy that the strange and sometimes morbid humor that surrounds police work is actually a natural defense mechanism to help you deal with the brutality, cruelty and death that you face on a daily basis.  These factors are not normally experienced on a daily basis by "civilians" and so for the most part they will not usually appreciate "cop humor".  Just my personal opinion of course but something I've learned is true........

As for the "head hunters".......   yeah, they can create problems at times where problems don't truly exists, but lets face it, they are a "necessary evil".  Police officers have a tremendous amount of power and for the most part supervision while in the field is limited at best,,,, if we didn't have internal affairs there as a watchdog the chances for abuse of power could get out of hand.  I was offered a job in my departments internal affairs division several years back and turned it down for the simple reason that I just didn't want to do that kind of work, but someone has to do I guess.    Again, just my opinion......

Well guys, I think Bob just felt like writing about something that was bazaar, and there is no reason to come down on him to hard. Remember Police are humans to and the are susceptible to making mistakes as we do. Just that they are in the publics eye and when one makes a mistake it makes bigger headlines than if we made the same mistake..:) Lets rack it up to humor...:)
