It has been almost a year since I joined the GTA. When I joined, I thought that this forum was a great group. The members were quick to help and answer questions or give advice. One long-time member even mailed some breech seals and shims to me-at his own expense! I truly enjoyed receiving advice, and tried to help others when I had the experience and knowledge to do so. It was great.
Another member made a post about a month ago, voicing his concerns that the forum was changing for the worse. That post was moved to the non-productive section almost instantly.  The only response allowed was Gene's.
I share some of the concerns voiced by that member, in addition to having some concerns of my own.
The disappearing posts, the banning of other tuners and members, selective moderation, bigotry, racism, gay bashing,  right wing rhetoric, and all of the trigger BS has led me to believe that the GTA is not the type of forum that I wish to be associated with.
This is the straw that broke the camel's back:
http://www.network54.com/Forum/184474/thread/122692081/last-1224110573/54+loosing+power+after+tune....
I doubt that many here will see this thread. It will probably be deleted, or moved to the non-productive section.
Gene, please remove me from the GTA membership list. I find that the control panel does not allow a member to delete oneself.
Thanks,
Michael

Michael, sorry to see you go. That is, of course anyone's choice.

Here are a couple of observations of mine, and solely my own opinions.....

Some may have noticed that I post here, or anywhere less often that I used to, (or perhaps not). It is exactly the kind of bickering, emotional, somewhat less than adult (in my opinion) repsonses that are exemplified in the referenced, linked post that have me shying away from this and any other forum recently. It never ceases to amaze me that folks become convinced that something must be true if someone posts it on the internet, (OK, even if 4,5, or 10 people post it.) Gosh, Barney in Idaho says it, so it must be so! How can I not have seen that before? Barney is such a straight up guy, and can only have everyone else's best interests at heart, not some personal grudge or agenda.....  "Grain of salt?"

What people get out of any public forum is completely dependent on what they put in to it. That and having the good common sense to do a bit more research on their own.

I'm not defending any one person here. Not my place, or desire. I personally can't imagine how anyone has the intestinal fortitude to work on another preson's air rifle, LORD, what a whiney bunch we are.......  I have had occasion to often see most, if not all of the "professional tuners" post on any number of air gun forums lamenting the unreasonable people they have to deal with, and pondering aloud why they keep doing it. I have seen many simply cease doing business or goig to some limited, modified by referral only business model. Personally, I wouldn't touch a screw driver to another person's rifle for all the tea in China.

As I have remarked to Gene, privately, in the past, once a passion becomes a "profession" it can often loose its luster. That's why I rarely beome involved in any "disagrements"here on this forum, or on any other. That is also one of the big reasons why I shy away from offering any opinion or advice, even if it is bassed on my own, imperical experience. God forbid that someone should take my advice and then not have the same experience I had. I'd be sure to be branded a charlatan and cronie who is the pocket of someone with some bucks. This is also the reason I rarely exercise any mdoerator or administrator authority here.

I'm frankly very disenchanted with how a noticeable fraction of this great community of shooting enthusiasts behave. It certainly has dulled the luster of my enthusiasm.

OK, I'm done ranting.........Sorry to have burdened any and all with MY whining.

Sorry you feel that way, Mike.  I did read Roger's post, and I note that Roger specifically never mentions anyone by name.  So I see no direct connection about how a post from last October on the YF might have anything to do directly with the GTA, except by some unspoken inference or innuendo, or why that would be the "last straw" for you.  Anyway, sorry to see you go.  Vaya con Dios, y adios.

PS:  I read Peak's post and tend to agree.  I find myself wanting to spend more time shooting and less time posting or moderating these days.  And in particular, I find myself wanting to get back more into shooting some of my powder burners, both rim fire and center fire, at distances of 100 yards and longer.  So if I seem to be posting less and enjoying it more, then you will know why  - I am at the range.

Mike, sorry to hear your leaving.  I have to agree with Tommy and Peak both.  Our experience lies in the eye of the beholder and how we choose to perceive our forum experience is exactly what we'll reap.  I know a few people who shoot regularly but don't read or get involved in the forums.  I also know a few people who do nothing but jabber on the forums and rarely shoot.  Such is life.

There will always be the occaisional whiner and when in disagreement- I've seen some heated battles in the halls.  Only once have I seen someone banned and that person was myself on the YF for speaking my mind about the same bull-pucky you've seen and witnessed.  I have no regrets.  THIS is the forum that I choose to spend my time in.

I will tell you this:  I have yet to see anyone on the YF give a $600+ dollar gun to another forum just for the fun of it!  In fact- I've seen it a few times amongst our GTA members.  We're a giving group...   but don't let that sway you.

Keep the shiny side up whatever you choose to do!

You should become more engaged instead of "taking your ball & bat and going home". Any form is no more than what the posters put into it. Pleasing everyone is totally impossible, no point to even trying. If you believe you're doing the right thing, - then all the best.

Hey Mike,...I'm sorry to see you leave the GTA. I read the link to the other forum and was,.....I don't know,...speechless maybe. Way too much mud-slinging for me,...guess that's why I stick to one forum and only one forum,...I don't have the time or inclination to get so deeply involved with the warring and drama some folks put into a hobby that should be fun. Me,... I like to keep things on the positive. I could rant about the "would of's, could of's, and should of's,....but I think that would be redundant at this point in time. Again I'm sorry to see you leave the GTA, and wish you nothing but the best of luck in any and all of your endeavors, Thomas

I quit posting anything which could turn out personal or be, unfortunately, twisted round for another's advantage.  Just made reading the forums totally unenjoyable.  Now I just take a peek and skip it.  Too many members have been turned off lately due to what are, clearly, personal issues which don't belong in the public arena.

But, as to bigotry, etc, I really can't recall anything overt or outrageous and, being probably the sole liberal of the bunch, I would notice it.  Of course, I don't read ANY of the R&P's anymore.  You go there, you takes your chances as there's something to offend everyone on those.

Better to just take a hiatus instead of asking to delete membership.  Things look an awful lot different the next morning.  (That's what she said.)

Well Mike, The last post that was moved to the Non-Productive Forum, was moved because Gene has an open door policy, meaning that if there is a problem, he would like the member to P.M. his or her problems to Gene, before starting a war on the forum. Gene is a GREAT Guy, and realy cares what members think !  Now on any other forum that I have been on, you would have received many posts saying GOOD-BY, We Didn't Want YOU Here anyway, and Don't let the door hit you in the but !  Now so far you havent received any of that type of post, and I hope you don't. The GTA is an ever changing forum, members leave, new members join up. Every group of new members has its good, very good and not so good members, some will need to be asked to leave, due to poor manners etc. Just remember one thing, you only get out of anything, what you are willing to put into it. I wish you the best of luck, in all your endeavors !  .Bill                P.S. I just went to fully read the post that you listed a link to, and it seems that it has been DELETED ?

Mike,
Hate to see a fellow NC man leave.
This is still a great place to be. Do what I do when I see
a post that is just....not needed. Ignore it and consider the source.
Where will you go? At least here, thing do seem to be moderated a little better.
Anywhere else could be no holds barred.

Anyway, best of luck where ever you go.

I can't help but take exception to your comments, Mike. Do you think they are tolerant, friendly, and not inflammatory? I don't!

Good luck finding the perfect liberal, tolerant, non-controversial shooter's forum.

Hey, if he wants to go, that's ok.  I couldn't find the DW thread.  Maybe it was taken off there because it WAS inflammatory, although they usually let them stay.  The DW is one of the least controversial forums going, anyway, so I doubt it was too much.

And let's not use "liberal" like a four letter word.    Statements like that are the seeds of discourse.
