Big Cat barrel cleaning
« on: May 25, 2009, 02:26:17 PM »

For the first time I cleaned my barrel on my BC. I have put approx 2500-3000 rounds through it and felt it was due. I used the trimmer line method and it worked well. It was VERY dirty. I ran about 10 cleaning pads through it and there was still some residual grime left. Once I cleaned the barrel I went outside and was excited to shoot it. I shot 10 pellets through it and realized they were screaming! I don't have a chrony but it was very obvious my velocity had increased significantly. I noticed the targets I was shooting at were being hit quicker than normal. There wasn't as much lag between the time I pulled the trigger and the time the pellet hit the target. I also noticed that my accuracy was dead on. I expected for my accuracy to decrease because that's what I read as being typical  after a barrel clean, but I saw no accuracy changes. Probably a little better accuracy to be honest.

Is this normal? Does velocity increase after cleaning a barrel typically? I have had some concerns about my velocity decreasing due to possible spring fatigue or something but I think I could of just fixed the problem. Does accuracy generally increase or decrease after a barrel clean? Anyone's experiences are greatly appreciated.
Thanks alot.

D********it man,...you stripped the heck out of that barrel,....sounds like it did when it was brand new huh?!?!? Yes, I've experianced the say as well,...velocity gain. Luckily for you it didn't effect your accuracy,....most folks can't say the same from what I gather. I would not be very concerned with spring fatigue at this point,...Put another 2000 rounds through her and let her slow down some. Mid to High 800's to low 900's is an ideal velocity for the most part. Then just "buff" the barrel with a patch,...or two!!!!!"Leave a little in there" if you get my drift. Sounds like you've got a hot-rod shooter for sure!!!! tjk

Yep, it's definately shooting like it did the first 1000 rounds. It's fun to shoot again! I imagine my velocity was down in low to mid 700's but it definately feels like it gained at least ~100fps  after the barrel clean.  Makes me grin again    :D

I luv my BC also.....I've got only a little over 2000 shots thru her.   I haven't cleaned the barrel since I haven't see a decrease in performance in her.  The BC is abit loud for backyard shooting....since my yard don't have enough trees to muffle some of the "pop".  But when I take her into the woods....no problem.  For the price....she's a great airgun.....accurate and hits hard.
