Hi guys I am also new to airguns. I bought a Crossman Quest to start. I have about a 1 inch group @ 20 yards, I've been trying different pellets and found that there is a lot of difference. I also tried a daisy spring gun but could'nt keep a good group @ 20 yds? (took it back)
I have a tremmor that prevents match grade shooting but I enjoy hunting! Is there anything I can do to improve accuracy on a budget?
Thanks for any help and I will continue to enjoy and learn from your web site
George

Welcome to ya.
Just rember that an air rifle is a different animal when it comes to getting good groups, not only pellet selection but the way you hold  the rifle is of utmost importance. You don't grip an air rifle like a center fire rifle, you just let it sit in your forward hand you have to let the rifle sort of float and let it do it's thing.

Enjoy  Rich.

Welcome aboard, George!  Don't know anything about the Quest, but there are plenty guys here who do, I'm sure you'll hear from them.  If it was a Gamo, I'd say get a trigger from Bob (aka Charlie Da Tuna), or get one of Rich's (aka Peterdragin) inserts.  But I don't know if Crosmans use the same trigger as the Gamo's.  But again, I'm sure someone knows.  Like Rich said, shooting a springer isn't like shooting anything else.  Check out the Library, there's a good article in there on the technique.  Other than that, the best accuracy improveer is just LOTS of shooting :-)!  Also, be prepared for a fairly long break in period, like 1000 pellets.  Again, welcome, and we'll see ya around.

I am a new kid on this airgun block too George. Great people here. Questions are answered and advice given. My advice is to be patient, especially with a new rifle. The more pellets you run through it the quicker it will "break in", and accuracy comes with time as well. My Gamo took around 2000 shots before becoming "broken in". Keep trying different pellets. Some pellets may require you to re-sight your scope or iron sights to adjust to that particular type of pellet. So good luck with this great sport and above all....have FUN 8)

geb2112,
Help me out guys, who wrote an explanation of the "artillery hold?"
Also, next time you are out practicing.
When you are shooting offhand, pay attention to see if the front sight moves in a particular pattern until you fire.
Usually it is a figure-eight or circular motion.  We all do it whether we know it or not.
Secondly, shoot your rifle enough to know exactly the moment the trigger is going to break.  You will learn this by time and distance of the take-up of stage 2.  If it's a single-stage then it's 1 less part to worry about.
Once you establish these 2 things, simply use them together something like this:
1) Take up 1st stage, hold final breath.
2) Watch wobble pattern as you take up stage 2, trigger breaks as front sight drifts onto point-of-impact.

Once you learn this (it's easier than you think) you should see a noticeable improvement.  Just practice this and have fun!

Check the library, there's an article by Russ Best called "Getting the most from your springer" or something like that.  Several others worth reading as well, but this one's the most specific.  BTW, your shooting technique applies equally well to lazy butts like me that shoot off a bench almost all the time :-)!  Later.
