Beeman R9 .22 Shooting report
« on: June 06, 2009, 05:59:13 AM »
I've had my R9 goldfinger for some time now.  I've slowly been running it in.  I put a Centerpoint 4-16x40 AO scope on it (Wally World Special) to replace the horrible Beeman-labeled scope that came with it.

I think it's starting to run in very nicely.  I'm starting to figure out of the hold sensitivities on it now, too.  It's not so picky where it rests on the forestock, but it is very picky how you grip the pistol grip.  Knowing that, this morning I got down to business.

This gun is capable of shooting one-holers, no doubt.  However, I am not.  Below is a pick of my best efforts with the R9 to date.  Each target is a 10 shot group at 12 yards outdoors.  Not bad, if I say so myself.  Once it runs in a little more and I figure out the hold sensitivities a little better, I expect these groups to get even smaller!

If you can find a used R9, I'd say jump on it.  They are great rifles.  And then someday you can always get Paul Watts to tune it.  Once my extended warranty run out, I might get Paul to tune mine.  The thing is, it shoots so great now there's really no need at the moment.  I bought the 5-year Beeman protection plan for $60 that covers all wear and tear, as well as defects.  Basically, a no-questions asked repair policy for 5 years.  And if I don't use their repair services, I can send it in after the 5 year period for a free tune.  So, I guess someday down the line I might get Paul Watts to tune it.

Nice shooting.  I also have my sights on a Beeman R-9.  For my situation I think it would be just right for intended purposes.  I have considered the R-1, but not sure if  I can use the extra power.    I see you got your R-9 in .22 cal.  What is your impression of that caliber?  I am leaning to the .20 cal for the extra speed.  Congrats on your rifle.  If you decide to sell let me know first.  Assuming you have not let it get run over by a truck.

BTW, in an un-tuned state what is the operation of the R-9 like in your own words?   IE, how smooth is it etc.

I just got a R9 in .177 about a week ago so I'm still breaking it in but out of the box it's a great gun that is very accurate. I got a bird at 46 yards and the gun made the shot seem very easy. I might get it tuned after I have at least 1000 shots through it, what does a tune on a R9 run.

Jay...that's some nice shootin'. Looks likeyou're gettingdime sized groups. It don't get much better than that I have an R9 Gold Finger in .20 and love it. Those are some very nice rifles that shoot right out of the box as if they had been tuned already Beeman does a great job on those upper end rifles. I got the warranty too. I figured it was a great investment for a "Free" tune down the road. The Bushnell Banner that came with mine is a great scope. I bought one for my Webley Vulcan 'cause I liked it so much. If you want to sell it let me know.

The R9 is one sweet rifle.  It's very accurate, and it is very tight in construction--no bad tolerances, etc.  The only thing that could stand some improvement is it has a little spring twang.  It's not bad, and as long as it keeps shooting accurately, I have no intentions to change anything with a tune immediately.  Maybe some day I'll tune it, but since it shoots so nice now, I'm in no hurry.

The firing cycle is very nice.  Very quiet.  No spring torque.  The recoil isn't very bad, either.  Like I said, it has a little spring vibration, but not all that bad.  It's a great gun and I doubt I'll ever sell it.

Thanks!  I'll probably never sell this rifle.  It's such a nice shooter, and it has sentimental value because my uncle got it for me as a special present.  I wish it came with a Bushnell Banner scope--those are nice!  I have one on my Slavia 643 and love it.  The R9 came with a terrible 3-9x32 AO scope that had the Beeman name stamped on it.  The AO knob did nothing--no change in focus or parallax adjustment.  It was obviously defective, but rather than trying to get Beeman to fix it because I didn't plan on using that model of scope anyway, I just opted for the Wally World Centerpoint special, which is a fine scope.

Paul Watts charges $265 and I think Gene's packages are $119 and $149, depending on how much you want it worked on.

i got a .20 r9 thatshoots so sweet. i did not think it would ever need a tune, til i shot a tuned DG. Ok... it needs a tune... But even without it is the smoothest rifle i've shot (bar the r7, but that is just a little r9...lol) and is the perfect caliber. very linear and packs a punch. If i was to buy a .22 i would shoot only RWS hobbies at 11.9 gr. it shoud be just as linear, though the pellet might loose speed at a higher rate due to the cross section being wider. Get the .20 if you get the chance.
