Compressed Air
« on: April 26, 2007, 01:40:27 PM »
I don't know anything about PCP guns but I know you have to buy some kind of compresser thing for the air.  My question is does it just suck in the outside air and put it under a lot of pressure?  Its not like you have to buy CO2 or anything is it?

Outside air.  Is much mnore to it than that, and the hand pumps that are used to reach these pressures run about $200-$250 (and take a lot of pumping).

No you don't buy CO2, PCP or HPA is High Pressure Air, plain old air like what you are breathing now.  You do not need a compressor per se, but you do need something to charge the gun...high pressure hand pump, compressor or SCUBA tanks.  When they say high pressure, they mean very high pressure, like 2000-3000psi, this is not the kind of pressure you are going to get with a normal tire pump or shop air compressor....but once you own the pump you don't ever have to buy air:)

Yep PCP pumps are a bit on the pricey side, mine was $150 used with no fittings.  Pumping is no fun, but I can charge my B50 from completely empty in about 15 minutes if I take a 2-3 minute break between every 30 strokes or so....so 5 or 6 sessions of 30 pumps from empty.  Most of the time though, unless your gun is leaking like mine atmo, you will charge to abouyt 190 bar, shoot maybe 20-30 shots, then recharge from 130bar in about 40 strokes...it's the initial charge that really bites, other than that it's not bad at all.  Where this is all really cool is when you finish pumping and shoot your gun, small caliber PCP's have very little if any felt recoil, they have gobs of power,.....what can I say, they are like "Airgun Crack", once you start shooting them you'll get hooked, even if you still shoot your other guns, them PCP's are too cool!

When J was over at CDT's last week, he had a CF Tank.. He also has a electric pump that he uses to pump up his tanks.. I think he takes the compressor on some of his FT trips as well.. Normally I have seen these types of compressor's on the net and the cheapest one I have seen so far is about $2400.00..  J's of course is a industrial type compressor or a high end compressor with all kinds of safety check valves.. His compressor will fill his CF tanks to 4200 psi.. Boy would I like one of those compressors...hehe
