Will NC STAR scopes handle airgun recoil??????
« on: July 11, 2009, 10:31:22 AM »
Hey Guys, I am a newbie to this site. I was wondering if anyone has tryed NC STAR scopes on these slam-guns as I call em? I have sent an E-mail to the company to see if they have built their scopes to withstand airguns. I hope so they are really decent scopes for the price. I have four of them that I have aquired thru so much gun trading. I have had a 6-24x50 on a Howa,1500 300 wsm which is a whole lot of gun, made for hunting Elk,brown and Grizzly bear and even Elephant, and it packs a whallop!  I had planned on putting My Nikon Monarch on it before deer season but the NC STAR has held up so good and has very suprising optics I think I will just leave the very expensive Nikon on My target rifle (custom Winchester model 70,pre 64)  Well I didnt  mean to get on here and talk bout firearms on a airgun site but I really want to know if I can use these scopes on a Gamo,Viper. I have had a few Leapers scopes and I definately like the NC STAR better but I know even the best scopes have to be made to handle the adverse recoil of an airgun. I will definately post the reply I get from NC STAR . I have searched there site for a airgun specific scope and have not found one,but the dealers at the gunshows have always said that every scope they make is built to handle anything from a pellet gun to 50 caliber. I would like to have a scope that compensates pellet drop just like this one scope I have on My AR-15 that compesates the 223 caliber round. Well I guess thats enuff babling on, I plan on starting My first tune on a airgun soon and then maybe I will have more to talk about. Jason

I have a NC 10-40x50 It was on my Diana 350.22 for a short time then on my Diana 350 .177  for 500 rounds and now sits on top of a Diana 46.  They are an ok scope at 40 power it is very gray and the field of view is like looking threw a bic pen tube ,and the adjusting turrets don't lock so a little bump to the turret will click off a few. I got mine from the "e- "place for around 170 .  Do I use it - Yes , Would I buy another - No

If you check the NC Star site, they mark some of the scopes as "airgun compatible" on the individual specs. I assume this means springer-rated. I wish all the optics guys would do this.

The Pistolero series does not have the airgun compatible on any of the spec pages but many of their other models do.

Thanks for the input Guys, I will probably put My 3-9x42 illuminated reticle,NC STAR on My Gamo,Viper. I probably got $10 in it if that, but still hate to ruin a scope. It seems to be real clear, I had it on My sons Marlin,22 long rifle. It done great on it. He could hit a quarter at 75-100 yards from a bench rest. As soon as I figure out what I want to get for My high end airgun and save up the money I will get a high quality airgun scope. Any suggestions would be great. I am considering 20 cal. But I know they are limited, I just want a very accurate, very dependable and nice looking target and varmint master. I really prefer to stay out of the PCP style as I have to many expensive firearms to keep up now. Thanks AKJC

for me i own a .20cal 1971 sherdan blue streak its hard hitting very good accuratecy very well built like a tank ,.they r very affordable and they r one of the best built .20 cals i have ever heard of besides the beeman r7,r9 or hw97k and those r more pricey but excellent shooters for sure many brothers in here will chime in and give u more insight on the shooters i mentioned.im into 300.00 or less rifles cause this is a very expensive habit.a great scope would be a airforce 4-16x50 142.00 so clear and eye piece is big enough for clear shots i had it on a rws48.22 and on a gamo so yes it could take a rough ride i still have it and still like new,

Coincidently I shot my best score today in FT with a new NCSTAR I mounted yesterday.  I picked up an IR 8-32x50 for $69.99 shipped on Ebay-look for seller Poor Fish.  No it isn't a Leupy or Nikko but for the price I'm happy.  Mine worked great.  Very clear optics at all magnification.  What I also liked about it was that it wasn't very relief sensitive.  I could easily get full field of view from multiple angles and distances.  I have a Leapers I'm ready to sell because it is so eye relief sensitive it is driving me crazy.

Only negative thoughts...it doesn't focus down below 15 yard or so very well.  Lowest marking is 25 but it worked just fine at 10 and 15 yards.  As someone else said the turret screws are somewhat suspect.  Even though mine is mil dot I'm "clicking".  While I get the audible clicks I'm not sure if it really is getting a full adjustment.  Plus the knob is a bit loose but I'm sure I can snug up with a jeweler's screwdriver.

Again, for the price I'm pleased with it's performance today but then again I've never used an Elite or Leupy...perhaps someday but for now I think I'm sticking with the NCSTAR.

By the way the owners sheet (not a manual) specifically states for firearms or air rifles.  It didn't specify PCP or springer but I'm pretty sure it will hold up fine.  If it lasts a year or two I'll be fine with it.  Plus I think you can get it fixed under warranty.

Hope that helps.

I've had more than a few of the Nc Star scopes and I think they work fine for me one of the scopes they make is great for B-3 or fast deer type rifles  rifles any rifle that you have a loading port problem since it is a short scope the mdl is the ( ( NcStar 4x30 ))  if you want to check it out and I still have to have one break using it on an air rifle. howie

Yes I have been using a NC STAR on My Viper, and its fine so far. The Gamo scope that came with it honestly lasted 5 shots before the crosshairs turned inside the scope. I expected it from what I have read on here. As for the Guy that said He has never tryed a Leupold or Nikko, The real difference to Me is clarity and mostly light transmission. You can see well after the sun sets thru my Nikko monarch,as where other scopes would take a hour or two from your shooting. Thanks for all the comments I will use this NC STAR till I find better. akjc
