C-series sheridan (Silver Streak
« on: August 08, 2009, 04:06:02 PM »
Hi all. I am brand new to the world of air gun collecting and have a few questions. I have just aquired an sheridan C-series air gun that has been laying in the attic for many years(not sure how many). It has a serial number of 465000 and is in what I would call almost mint condition. The only downside is that even though it is a beutiful gun and pumps up and fires it has very little power no matter how many pumps. It has the air hole with a warning not to oil.Is it still possible to oil this model?  My question is does any one know what year this gun may be by the serial number. and if I must find a repair part for the air chamber, where do I find the parts and how do I aquire the manual to learn how to tear it down for repair. I live in Louisiana and have called virtually every gunsmith I can find but none will work on an air gun. I would love to fire this gun on a range and posibally find more like it so I will be readin this forum as often as possible. I want to thank any and all in advance who can help me.

Serial number lookup is here: http://www.crosman.com/airguns/service/benjamin

The guru of Sheridan repair and mods is Tim at Mac1: http://www.mac1airgun.com/index.htmHe responds better to phone than email, though.

Crosman Corp. may have the parts, but Tim probably does too and knows those things inside and out.

Oil is probably not the issue. You are always supposed to store the Sheridan (and most pumpers) with a couple of pumps in them, to keep pressure on seals and O-rings. The seals have probably dried and shrunk or cracked, but you still have a great gun and they can all be replaced. The Silver Streak is a desirable classic and a great shooter.

Crosman's website has date charts for older guns. Looks like yours was built sometime after 1985. How does the safety work on your rifle? Does it have a "rocker" safety (buttons on either side of the rear tang for Safe and Fire), or does it have a push/pull thingy at the rear of the tube?
Crosman bought Benjamin-Sheridan in the '90s and the serial numbers changed to conform to Crosman's system of using the mfg date as the first three digits of the serial numberIn 1995 they switched from the old style soldered in valve to the current removable cartridge valve.

You can oil the pivot points and try to get some on the rear of the piston that you can see in the slot. A very small amount in the air hole won't hurt this one time.
If it doesn't pump at all the pump cup is bad. If it pumps and fires but like there was only one pump no matter how many you put in, it is probably the check valve. If air blows out the barrel when you pump, it's probably the exaust valve.
I picked up an old rocker safety Blue Streak earlier this year. When pumped all the air went right out the barrel. I found a repair kit at Pyramyd Air that had the seals and the special tool to take the valve apart. The old 'Dan works great now.

Here's a link to the parts kits:

Thank's for the info and the sites. This is very helpful information. It is good to find sites such as this where a person can ask questions and receive positive feedback.

I have heard some say to put a couple drops of oil on the pump cup and stand it in the corner for a day or two to allow gravity to pukll the oil down onto the valve. Im not sure if you are top put the drops of oil into the barrel or just on the cup. Maybe someone else will remmber which it is. I have read that many have had luck with this to regain function from a bneji that had been sitting idle with no air in the reservoir.

BTW, use Crosman Pellgunoil, Mac-1 Secret Sauce, or plain old Non-Detergent straight 30wt motor oil to oil your Sheridan or Benjamin.

I just picked up a silver streak on e-bay for 41 bucks plus shipping.  I used the ser number look up and it shows to be made in 1979.  It looks to be in very good condition but it shoots weak.  No matter how many times you pump it, shoots like one or two pumps in it.  Judging fromt your post, it may be the check valve.  How do you go about repairing that?

Thanks

Tim

You'd need the kit and the instructions I liked to before. The valve is soldered into the tube so you need the special tool to reach down in the tube to unscrew the end of the valve to get it apart.

Might ask on the Yellow who besides Tim rebuilds these.  I think they have lead seals.  Servicing one shouldn't cost too much and they are NICE guns.  Especially the factory triggers.
