Preparing a new springer to fire
« on: August 20, 2009, 09:55:11 AM »
OK. Now that I have a new Beeman R9 on the way (expecting next Tuesday). First thing is to open the box and admire my new R9. How long? What is the average time allowed for this step? Next gently take it out of the box and check it over for anything out of the ordinary. That is as much as I know what to do. I want to shoot it. Thats why I bought it. I want to shoot it now, but I know there is something else to do first. What? Run a swab down the barrel soaked in goo-gone? Tear the AR down and clean it with denatured alcohol solvent? Will it be packed in grease or cosmolene? What should I do in preparation to shooting it? Thanks in advance for your tips and comments.

Chas

Springers I currently own: RWS Diana 34, .177, Gamo Whisper Deluxe, .177, G RT- III trigger, Turbo Tuned by Gene and soon to be delivered, Beeman R-9, .20 cal

Your not lost if you don't care where you are.

Since it's an R9, I'd say clean the barrel and shoot it.  Figure out what pellets it likes, and after you've shot it awhile, adjust the trigger to your liking if it needs it, then shoot it some more.  Once it's broke in, say 1000 pellets from now or so, THEN think about a tune.  If you like the way it shoots, don't worry about a tune, just keep shooting it.  R9's have a reputation for being a little twangy out of the box, sometimes it goes away, sometimes not.  Some people don't notice, some it makes crazy.  You just bought yourself a world class rifle, congratulations and enjoy :-)!  Later.

Charles, the answer to "How long are you allowed to admire it?" : UNKNOWN. R-9 owners everywhere have never stopped admiring their rifles since they took them out of the box.World-wide phenomenon it seems.Like Dave said, just clean the barrel to remove the factory grime, check the stock screws for snugness and she's ready to shoot. Chronograph it if you can after 100 shots or so to check for consistency and power. This will give you a baseline that you can later compare with another chrony check say after 3000 shots or so. You'll know by then if you want to spend the money for a pro tune or not.Congratulations on a fine rifle. Enjoy.

For a $500+ "BB-Gun". I wouldn't imagine there's too  much that needs to be done other than the forementioned advice as given. I'd be very careful cleanning the barrel though. My advice,...keep the lead flowing through it!!!! Congrads on your new shooter!!, tjk
