Need to hush a Gamo
« on: August 24, 2009, 10:04:58 PM »
I have a gamo varmint hunter, and I need to quiet down the shots. I have been using it for about one year without any problems, but I have a neighbor who is a pita and has complained about the noise and threaten to call the cops.  Just so you know, I shot in a remote location and over a lake, so the sounds carries a bit.  What do you suggest?   tune up? Muzzle Break?  Full Shroud?

A tune does wonder's for calming down the sound of a shooter since it's the action that makes the most noise. :o  :0 Ed

a tune is number 1. if you can put a gas ram. it will eliminate the spring noise. also fill the stock with shop rags... it will muffle the action.

If your neighbor is complaining about the mechanical noise when you shoot then I would venture a guess that he really is a pita. Most all springers with exceptions being the Walther/Hatsan models and a few of the other big magnums, just don't make enough noise that the average person who's not a pita would complain. But if you've been shooting those ultra light pellets (like PBA raptors) that make a super sonic crack like a rimfire rifle then the neighbors might get a little annoyed with that noise. If that's the case switch to a heavier pellet for quieter shooting.Tuning it might make it more pleasureable to shoot but is not a guarantee to quiet it down much. The exception to that would be if you also added a baffled shroud over the barrel.Like Jason said, it's always good if you can make a friend out of an adversary and you might if you try.

I ws thinking of adding a barrel  shroud.

Also,  some of the noise if from shooting at cans, so I just I will have to stay with paper targets.  Yup, the Neighbor is a reall PITA.. They call him crazy chief,.

Who can do a tune up and also add barrel shroud or muzzel break?

There's not much you can do with that stock bull barrel on that particular GAMO rifle, being as that it's covered in polymer/plastic material. That being said, you can probably have a tuner cut off the barrel -- retap the barrel housing -- fit on a threaded barrel and recrown it with a MuzzleBrake....however, that'll cost you a bunch. So I would go with either a tune, or a Gas-Ram from PyramydAir....both will end up costing you the same amount, unless you get a good deal somewhere. Good luck!

what about inviting the PITA neighbor for a relaxing plinking session? you think he might become more receptive? maybe talk about setting times in which you can shoot freely and designated,no shooting noise, times?

That's a logical idea, so naturally a member of PETA wouldn't go for it ;)
