Swapping Leaper's scope for Centerpoint
« on: September 12, 2009, 06:09:03 PM »
Well this is probably nothing worth posting but I have formed an opinion so I might as well share it with the world. I have a Turbo tuned Gamo,Viper that has become a real tack driver. I had been using a Leaper's 5th Gen 3-9x40AO scope on it. And I really didnt have any gripe's about it accept for the slightly crooked crosshair at the top of reticle and the close eye relief.I had baught my Dad a Centerpoint 4-16x40AO for his Target shotgun(Turkey shootin) and  it is by all accounts almost identical to a Leaper's scope, but after really lookin at it I realized the eye relief is much more to my liking and the crosshairs are straight LOL. Seriously the Centerpoint has a better turret system IMO they have a extra lock ring that locks it by finger instead of having to carry that 1/8 allen wrench round with ya,it also has the allen screw to reset 0 with if needed. Best of all the Centerpoint are a little cheaper, Their 4-16x40 is $69 at wally world and the Leaper's 3-9x40 is a bit more. Both have Emerald coated lense's and flip up scope cover's,both are green and red illuminated, which I think people rarely use anyway. The Leaper's does come with a sun shade, but then the Centerpoint comes with a darn good set of scope rings (for weaver mounts) The Centerpoint has 100% warranty against fog, waterproof and shockproof as does Leaper's. Also the Centerpoint is designed by Crosman airguns so it is tested with some of the harshest recoiling airguns. To summarize, both scopes are very worthy of any airgun or firearm for that matter, but the fact is after really scoping out both brands I have baught another Centerpoint to use on my Viper, cause Dad wasn't givin his up. I guess this sound like a review but I just wanted to point out a few things as I'm sure some of you are deciding What scope your gonna put on that new airgun ya just got. And I have owned many, many scope's from $100 NC Star's  to $600 Bushnell,Elite's,Nikon,Monarch  to $1000 Swarvoski  and I have gathered some input along the way. I will say that the technology now day's has allowed the smaller companies with more economic priced scope's to really narrow the gap in quality between the cheap and ridiculously priced scope's. But I just see the Centerpoint a slightly better value, with that said I have never even looked thru a BSA airgun scope that may compare in price. Some people sware by them but I was never impressed by thier non-airgun scope's so I just wouldn't buy one. Either way ya go you are gonna like the optic's you get per dollar, both are a good value and from what I can tell in all power's and size's.AKJC1977

Yeah the centerpoint and Leapers are probably made at the same factory in China. But there are a few small differences in design. I wouldn't say rebadged, because their are a few things different other than the name brand. But the covers that cover the battery compartment are interchangeable. Yeah I had to try it,LOL. Im sure it could be difference in magnification powers since the leapers was 3-9x40 and the centerpoint is 4-16x40 but it sure is clearer to look thru, and it is enuff to notice so that is undeniable to me. I am getting ready to buy a Marauder and have a tech force on the way so I needed a few good extra airgun scopes anyway.AKJC1977

Re-badged or not, my guess is it depends on which model Center Point and Leapers scopes you compare.

The Centerpoint 3-12x44 AO 30mm compact listed in Pyramid's site,
http://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/CenterPoint_Power_Class_3_12x44AO_Compact_Rifle_Scope_Mil_Dot_Reticle_30mm_Tube/1648

.... is identical in every detail to my Leapers 3-12x44 AO 30mm Acushot , specs and all, including the target turret locking rings which don't show in Pyramid's picture of the Leaper.

The only differance I can find is I paid $129.00 for my Leapers as opoposed to the $189.00 for the exact same scope in Center Point.

Hey airschool, The difference is the price. Wal-mart carries Centerpoint and you can get a bigger better alike scope for half the price. They have several sizes at this wal-mart. I got 4-16x40AO for $69.00 and the 3-9x40AO"s are $39.00 6-24x50AO $89.00. You wont find one that cheap in Leapers or Centerpoint anywhere. I just liked the bigger powered scope better,it has more eye relief. And the fact you can walk in touch it and buy it instead of ordering is nice too. Both good scopes, but the 4-16x40 beat the one I had been using out. So don't worry Im not trying to knock Leapers scope's,but rather making small talk about why I liked my new one better. And I am sure you would have liked it better to have saved about $60  as opposed to that $129 on Leaper's. AKJC1977

Yes, I would, but for some reason my local Walmart doesn't carry Center Point scopes. And if they did, I doubt they would have the compact 3-12  model  I wanted.  So, the only way was to order on-line.

I had heard good things about Leaper's and their guarentee, but nothing about Center Points guarentee. A few guys were advising to get the Center Point at Walmart so that when it craps out, just take it back and swap it for one that works. That  didn't instill confidence in me, so Leapers it was.

Right after installing the air venturi  I thought I was having a problem with it holding zero, but it turned out to be a blown seal. Honed inside the reciever, installed a new Maccari  seal, and I've been very pleased with the Leapers since.
