is this 100yds?
« on: October 01, 2009, 01:13:55 AM »
Tcups has me thinking 100yds again!  So to practice the MOA skill I am going shoot 30 shots each day (if time permits!)  and I am trying to confirm  if I got this right... 3/10th of an inch at 30yds is 1 inch at 100yds. Will this target work for my practice, 5 bulls in a row is close to minute of angle? BTW this will be an incredible feat of marksmanship if I get one in a row LOL:)  Tony   http://www.tgscom.com/images/sharedimages/GlockFAQ/bullseye_thirdinch_30.pdf

A minute of angle is actually something like 1.04 inches at 100 yards, but yes - 1 inch, CTC at 100 yards = 0.5 inch, CTC, at 50 yards and 0.3 inch, CTC, at 30 yards.

Remember that CTC means the total size of the group can be larger than the CTC measurement by the diameter of the pellet being shot, so that for .177, the group could be 0.477 inch and for a .22, 0.52 inch

Effectively, if you can cover a 5-shot group at 30 yards with a dime, you should be shooting MOA.

Tommy, I like the size of a dime and CTC plus a pellet width explanation:) I will go practice now, see if I can plug those bulls. I am curious to see how many in a row I can get hehe:)thanks,Tony.

Technically, that bull, if it is a true .33 inches when printed, is .03 too large (at 30y)..... which is plenty close enough for me!
I have a stack of the target you posted printed out. Now that you've reminded me of them, I think I'll use them too although something with a faint cross will make it easier to line up your crosshairs the same way every time. I'll worry about that when I'm able to print sub 1 inch groups at 30y.

I must type really slow - there were no responses when I started...

Jeff, I am  printing on staples gloss paper with" none scale to fit" and it certainly is close enough for me also:) The lines are a good thought also, I will set my goal as five bulls in a row for now then raise my bar to the big 30 bulls in a row, may be awhile but should be fun, heh:) .Tony.

Again, guys, the "standard" for membership to the MOA club, at least on the rim fire forum, is to shoot a target with two consecutive 5-shot groups, determine the CTC size, average them and have that average be "MOA" or not.

Every "single" shot is a sub-MOA group.  It is only when you take 10 consecutive shots, measure, and achieve MOA that you qualify.  And again, remember, it is AVERAGE group sizes.  So, one can, and usually does shoot one group that could be a bit over MOA and another sub-MOA group that averages within MOA accuracy.  One flyer doesn't necessarily DQ you.

For example:

I understand. The 30 bull target will get too messy to measure everything (esp if I take 5 shots per bull) but I need practice at distance and with the 30 bull target I won't have to get up as often :-).
