Spring "Buzz"?!?!?!?
« on: October 02, 2009, 12:03:37 PM »
Ok, Here's the deal,..or more like a question and hypothesis. My CDT TT'd Diana 34 (.22)has a very healthy buzz happenning!!! The rifle is Super to shoot, and is a real piece of quality made equiptment. Thanks a million Bob!I would guesstimate that it has no less that 5 to 6K rounds through it. Now for my question:::: Will a spent/worn outspringbuzz more than normal?!?! I've always listenned to my rifles when shooting, and the 34 always had a nice crisp pop to it. The buzz has been a gradual occuranceuntil lately. But, the one thing that has alwaysset me back with it is,.. that some pellets are very hard to seat in the breech. For instance,...if I load an RWS SD in it,...it will buzz abit. Same with some old Benji domes. JSB Exact jumbo's,...you guessed it buzzing again ( all three fit in the breech with less effort too). But with the Beeman FTS's( which I get the most consistant accuracy),... I really have to force the pelletshard to seat with a pel-seat tool,...as a result,...No buzz at all. The chroney shows a very nice fps consistancy,...so I don'tbelieve the spring has snapped. My Hypothesis,..#1....after cross referencing the "Straight Shooters pellet comparison charts"in the library, either I should trythe JSB Expresses, and the BeemanSilver Ace's which both fall close in weight and skirt diameter,...although the Beemans do step up a bitin grain weight,....#2 Change out the spring with the factory spring Bob returnned after the TT,...or option #3,.....bevel/crown the breech port a tad to fit a better variety of pellets. So what do you folks think?!?!? Thanks, Thomas

I may very well be wrong Thomas but,,, after "only" 5 or 6 thousand rounds I suspect your spring may have developed some cant & the lubes may have seen thier day!!I suspect it is time to make a trip up to visit with Gene/Bob soon. I should be there next week myself!!Would be nice to see Ya again Buddy,,,, Tim.

Just a little food for thought and maybe a little logic thrown in.

That would have a JM GRT spring in it and it is a good spring and unless abused, should have a good life span. That said though, as a spring fatigues, it will at the same time lose some of it's rigidity and have a tendency to cant and oscillate more. As that happens, it will also throw off more of the lube that is adhered to the spring more readily loosing it's dampening ability. At the same time, as the spring fatigues, the piston will have a tendency to have more piston bounce and this could also be increased by a poorly fitted pellet. Plus, if a heavier pellet is used, it could also increase the piston bounce factor and in fact, increase the spring fatigue and oscillation.

Now then, by the same token, if the pellets are loose going in the throat and no resistance, you might have a bit of piston slam and the same results would for the most part be met. That would also apply if light pellets were used.

If it were I and it were my gun, and with a GRT spring in it, I think I would just pop the spring out and relube it with heavy tar and see if that resolves the problem. Chances are it will.

While I was at it though, I would rework the loading port also. It sure wouldn't hurt and would undoubtedly give you more pellet options I would think.

Hmmm...Such is the fun of 2nd guessing the springer airgun.

That will be 10 cents sir......lol...

Well folks,...I finally got the nerve to delve into one of my prize rifles ( I'm not a high end shooter so bear with me). The Diana has served me very well in the past so you can be asured that I was sweating like a "you know what" in church performing this operation!!!! After de-compressing the action, I inspected the spring. It was in perfect shape,...no canting, lubes slightly worn away,...but upon measurement,..it was about 9 3/4" long. Kinda short compared to the factory spring. I think it safe to say that this wire was spent!!! Luckily I had the OEM spring, polished the ends, tarred it over, cleanned of a few parts and added moly to the metal to metal components. Put everything back together and gave her a test shot. Just a "pop" she sang!!!! Some say I should have went ahead and replaced the seal,...but I didn't feel this was neccesary for the time being. Ran it over the chroney with some Beeman FTS's and getting 711 to 718's!!! I'm happy with that!!!! SD's in the 690's. Saw something I haven't seen in a while with this rifle,...Nice "healthy" dieselling. Not too much,...and not to dry either!! I'm tickled pink! Special Thanks to Timmy and Bob! Thomas

Now you can heat the old spring up orange hot, and pull it out straight. Can make lots of useful tools from spring wire. Oops, this is the airgun forum, not blacksmithing.
