Hennessy Hammock
« on: October 07, 2009, 06:04:00 AM »
Took a long look at the Clark Jungle Hammocks, but ultimately decided I wasn't going to do any extreme cold weather camping and wasn't willing to pay 2X the cost of the Hennessee Explorer Deluxe Asym.

PS:  Do you think this looks like a black bear taco?

I prefer the Pawley's Island hammock.  Too lazy to go camping.

The whole hammock & fly slide into the two "snakeskin" tubes on each end of the hanging ropes.  w/ two 'beaners and the "tree hugger" straps, set up / take down is under 3 minutes and the hammock never touches the ground.  The whole thing is waterproof, mosquito netted, and only weighs about 3 lbs.  Coil the storage tube and it easily ties to the back of a day pack.  Doesn't get much easier.  The larger model accommodates folks over 6' and up to 300 lb.  Seems like a better deal than a 1-man backpack tent, and a pretty good arrangement for those of us older types who need a mid-day nap during our hunts and don't want to lay on hard, uneven, or cold, wet ground.

Does it come with trees?  Might not be too popular out on the Plains.  No, seriously, that's a really nice setup.

Tommy,

I don't understand, real hunters love to sleep on uneven, wet, cold, hard, snake and bug infested grounds where the critters can come on in and meet and greet you up close and personal.

O.K., Your just a CAMPER !!!! Always watch your fires !

Says you can set up on the ground, but you have to spread the fly and mosquito netting with a couple of short poles and the tie downs.  But Western NC has no shortage of trees -- or insects -- or squirrels -- or bears.  And I think some of those critters Big Bill has been sleeping with may have eaten into his brain.  LOL.  Charlie da Tuna got me looking for the hammock set up.  Seems he used something like this in BoraBora or PangoPango or where ever it was he bugged out to some years back.

The hammock can also be used as a camp seat, and the fly can be arranged to provide a dry area to cook on the alky stove, etc.  Would have been a lot cheaper if I were under 200# or even 250# and not over 6ft tall.  Maybe I will bring it to Timmy's place next fun shoot.

Now Tommy,,,,, I have been to your mountain house. It is surrounded by deep GORDIOUS woods all around. Views to DIE for!!8) If I were you,,,,, I would venture out a few hundred yards on a hunt,,,, even spend the whole day out there & maybe even venture a mile or so on your vast land. However,,,,, even after dark I would use one of dem cool flashlights like Jerry has to find my way back to the house!! If you ever invite me on a hunt wiff Ya,,,,,, I will be on the back deck after dark with the grille & blender "Fired Up"!!:p :D 8) (I will pitch my tent/hammock on the back deck!!)8) Timbo.

Good one Tommy !

It was those Rockey Mountain Spotted Fever Ticks and Earwigs :)

You better tie that hammock up high, the way you have it now, a bear could just snuggle up and clime right on in with you. A black bear can clime real good !!!!! And even a small bear can reach up 4 to 5 feet, clawing for some vittles . I hope you took a ladder with you to get into it :)

Understand.  But every so often, it is nice to get out and just be alone in the woods.  Been that way since I was a kid.  The ocean never had much fascination for me.  Give me a southern climax hardwood forrest or better yet, a mountainous temperate rain forrest, especially if there is a fresh running stream with trout, nice prevailing breezes, no man-made noises, no phones, no mail, no hassles -- ahhhhh.  How long has it been since any of you spent a day without any "civilization" to distract you?  Shadow knows what I am talking about.  I love being in the woods before daylight and watching everything "wake up".  Hope the hammock will be something that makes me do more of that -- even if it is set up only a few hundred yards from the mountain house.  And, like I said, I have reached the age where I like to take a nap during my "great white hunter" expeditions.

By the way, Timbo -- Langley is sure a nice looking pup.  Can she catch a frisbee yet?  Annie can!

When I read your post Tommy it was the first thing that came to mind.

That was about 35 years ago and they didn't have anything like that available at the time. Even if they did, it would have been too much in size.  Would have been nice to have though. The ones that I took were a little larger than a soft ball when all rolled up and made out of nylon parachute line. I think they are still available. All you needed was two sticks to use as spreaders and a couple of trees. I did learn one thing.... never tie them between two banana trees. The line pulled right through one of them after a couple of nights, I woke up laying on the ground. :0  :0 What a rude awakening... :)

I took almost two hundred lbs of survival gear in two duffle bags and was down there for 7 months and at that time, on a very remote island in French Polynesian Marquesas Islands, living with the native people.  What a great experience and almost didn't come back. It's a whole lot different down there now though and enough to almost make you cry if you could see the difference and what has happened and the changes between then and now. Really sad.

Didn't mean to hijack your thread Tommy....

Not possible to hijack a rambling thread with no real point.  Just hanging out in the back room.  Home with the flu today.  Yuck.  But not to worry -- the office is churning away and will save the work for me to do later.  Did you check out the frisbee dog link?  I was proud to figure out how to do my own videos and post them -- without having to resort to "You Tube"

I gotta tell ya Tommy.... you really get into things. I can't figure out how you can cram it all in. You must have 36 hour days... :D  :D
