Anyone got a quick, cheap, and great favorite shelving system?

The new garage (to me) is an empty rectangle. Unfinished interior, open rafters, really a blank page. It is a big two-car, single door,but it will never have more than one car in it (and I hope I can keep that one out).

I have table saw, band saw, sanders, scroll saw, drill press, dust collector, and sundry other items. I also have a LOT of miscellaneous junk, not to mention every air gun box I have ever received (lord, don't let her count them). The only workbench I have is a pathetic home made POS. I have one window with an excellent field of fire and a walkthrough door.

Ihave the opportunity toput together aneat littleshop, but I gotta have some reasonable storage ASAP.

Show me whatcha got, put up a link. Money IS an object but I need storage and organization. Organization is NOT my strong point, and I am a hoarder, not quite pathological but sooner or later you can put near anything to use.

I will say, U will get what U pay for ! The cheaper shelves will collapse, bend under stress of the load or buckle. I have gone both ways over my lifetime, and in the long run, if your still young, get good quality ! In the long run it WILL be cheaper !

That's for almost everything in life, if your gonna use it much, get the better quality !

I bought a molded plastic shelving system about 7 years ago (Rubbermaid?), and when I recently tried to take it apart, it had embrittled and cracked in numerous places. I would suggest metal wire shelving as the best over the long haul. Costco carries shelving units that are clones of the Metro shelving. These units are free-standing and made from plated steel wire. This type of shelving is strong and durable, can be configured in many ways. Many people refer to them as "bread racks", as their original market was the food industry. You'll see many imported clones.

Wire racks might be good. Thanks for the suggestion! I have two of the Rubbermaid upright cabinets and I don't think they are the way to go for long term, substantial storage.

Bill, I agree. I should qualify that I would like cheapest quickest route to good shelving. This could include lumber and metal fittings. Simpson Strong Ties make something for everything, but when you factor in their cost plus lumber and labor, they aren't all that cheap. Also the wood warps over time unless you spend a bundle on that, too.

I would like mostly open shelves, and maybe some with doors. Those modular setups from Home Depot seem like the wrong mix of high cost for cheap materials. They look nice in the store but I don't seem them staying that way in a workinggarage shop.

I will be searching around but if there is a trick setup that I'm missing, let me know.

Dave, I used a row of chrome wire racks like from from sams club 5 shelves. I then got rubbermaid plastic bins different heights/sizes and adjusted the shelves hieght  to match, so no wasted space keep everything nice in side Tony.

Go around to your local drug stores or retail stores and ask them if they're getting rid of any of their shelving. Chances are there's about 4 or 5 display shelves in the back that no one wants to throw away 'cause they don't feel like disassembling them. You could probably get them for free. Maybe a few bucks at most.

I got a few for free from a Smart & Final store not far from me. Just gotta take the time and ask one of the managers.

Thanks for the idea- I just read a similar tip on a woodworking forum and I might give that a try. Some guy talked to an HD manager and got some of their discarded racks. Those are pretty heavy duty!

I've gotten some good metal shelving, file cabinets, and desks from the metal recyling area of our local dump. With every down-turn in the economy there seems to be office stuff being tossed.

When a Super Market warehouse closed up not far away, there was alot of formica covered partical board shelving with oak edging in the wood burn pile. Got there before they threw the match and found enough to shelve most of my shop.

Also, checkout  garage/yard sales.
